Yugi's relationship with his grandfather is difficult to place exactly. Early on Yugi demonstrates, if not a liking for his grandfather, at least an interest in his well-being. A common theme throughout the series, however, is Yugi's continuous demonstration of apathy toward his grandfather, referring to him as the "old man who lives in [his] basement", and even showing total disregard for his life.
