In addition to parodying the original anime, the Abridged Series often makes reference to other areas of popular culture, including films, television and the internet. Music also comes into play, when popular music is often used as background music, with a song relating specifically to the situation in which it is being used.

While most references to popular culture are brief, a few are recurring. For example, the characters of [[Rex Raptor]] and [[Weevil Underwood]] are modeled directly after the characters Beavis and Butt-head.
