They're still mining ptlney of gold, and since gold is fungible you can't really assign particular use to that mining.Your second point seems equally applicable to bitcoin miners. They're providing a valuable service, too creating a global sequence of transactions to prevent double-spending. When new coin creation stops, we'll still need the miners, and we'll pay them with transaction fees.
