Yogyakarta province is one of the most densely populated regions of Indonesia. The town came into being in 1755, after the division of Mataram into the Sultanates of Surakarta and Yogyakarta (Solo). Gamelan, traditional and contemporary Javanese dances, the wayang kulit leather puppet theater and other expressions of old-fashioned art will keep the visitor spellbound. Local builders succeed in the arts of batiks, silver and leather work.

At the center of south Central Java lies the area of Yogyakarta, the support of Javanese culture and tradition. In the north the unstable, Mount Merapi the Fire Mountain with engaging real beauty stands strongly guarding the surrounding nature.

Tremendous fertility is given by this gigantic volcano, sometimes dangerous with its eruption and lava spitted from its crater, but at the same time to the land. That's the key reason why the farmers people living in its pitch don't desire to keep their ancestor's host to birth. They've a mystical connection with Merapi to live in harmony with 'the rulers' of the hill to keep them safe and calm.

It revealed that the name Jogja, as opposed to Yogyakarta or Yogya, is employed as a promotion to market Yogyakarta since Y is really a difficult alphabetical start for some international viewers -both reading and spelling. Even JOG could be used as nickname, while Jogja is easily pronounced as JOG-ja.

Yogyakarta is well known for its magic function, leather puppets used for shadow plays (wayang kulit), and a distinctive style of making batik dyed cloth. It's also known because of its vivid contemporary art world. Yogyakarta can be known for its gamelan music, including the special type Gamelan Yogyakarta, which developed in the courts.

Water Fort

Built in 1758 by Sultan Hamengkubuwono I just west of the kraton, element of this pleasure garden and castle is at present a maximum of an intriguing number of ruins, pools, arches and underground passages closed by massive walls, however, the central courtyard with the nymph-baths has been restored.

The Water Castle is located in the older part of the city within walking distance from the Bird Market. Numerous batik classes line the avenue leading to the pleasure garden's entrance.

Imogiri

Imogiri is the cemetery of the royal descendants from Yogyakarta and Surakarta. The graveyard is situated on a, reachable by 345 stone steps leading to it.

Imogiri is approximately 17 kms south of Yogyakarta and easily accessible by bus or car. The tombs are made within three main courtyards.

Entry to the smaller courtyards housing the tombs of the princes is allowed only on Monday 09.00 - 12.00 or Friday 13.00 - 16.00. Conventional Javanese dress needs to be worn, which however may be used on the spot at a moderate price. The cemetery is closed throughout the Moslem month of Ramadhan.
