RSS broken?

I can't subscribe to RSS or Atom feed in any wikis here. Tried with Safari and Firefox.

It works perfectly fine with my wiki --Levenbreech Vor 11:57, 24 March 2006 (PST)
the resulting rss/atom file has an extra newline at the beginning which messes w/ my newsreader (i think to be well-formed xml, the first line must states it's xml); i checked wikipedia and they don't have the same problem: config or version issue? -- herb 10:56, 8 May 2006 (PDT)
This is likely to be a version issue. Right now I am focusing on transistionioning to the dedicated server. After that I will be upgrading mediawiki to the newest version, which should resolve this issue. - Rob

Weird SQL error

I get a weird SQL error when trying to add a specsific link on the Lorien Trust Links page. You can see it about half-way down under a comment. If I try to format it correctly I get:

Warning: mysql_query(): supplied argument is not a valid MySQL-Link resource in /home/.olin/robkohr/site_settings.php on line 239

Could someone take a look please? Thanks in advance. JiFish 07:14, 27 April 2006 (PDT)

I had the same issue on my wiki. Rob had his server set up to block the blogger.com domain (spam redirect issues), and I was trying to link to an article there. It's likely that one of your links goes to a domain that Rob has had to block for some reason (in fact, while posting this I tried the geocitiesDOTcom domain and got the error - remove that link and the page will work again). --Admin of the IT6740 UDL Wiki
If this is the case, it's going to cause headaches for my link list. :( JiFish 10:53, 2 May 2006 (PDT)
A better spam protection system will be rolled out when I install the newest version of mediawiki
Cool, thanks! JiFish 15:28, 9 May 2006 (PDT)

Spell Checking Extension

Spell Checker at work 1

Just a wish, but this would be super for my Fan Fiction Wiki Renmiri 12:22, 16 April 2006 (PDT)

Yep, I'll roll this out with the new version of mediawiki. In the meantime, I suggest getting google toolbar for mozilla. It features a text area spellchecker.

Image:Grin.gif Yiipee!!! Thanks Rob! Renmiri 05:30, 4 May 2006 (PDT)

  • Add buttons on MediaWiki article edit page that allow users to turn on spell-check, fix any problems, then return to edit mode.
  • Configuration:
    • MediaWiki 1.6 and newer - just add include on localsetings.php
    • Mediawiki 1.5 - include on localsetings.php AND Add 1 line (bug fix) to monobook.php
      • How do I change monobook.php? I already know how to change monobook.css.
    • MediaWiki 1.5 [1]

As documented in MediaWiki Bug ID 3603, none of the default templates insert the headscripts template variable. This extension will not work without the following line added to the site skin template file:

 <?php $this->html('headscripts') ?>

The single line above the closing of the head tag is all that is needed.

This example shows the changes to the default MonoBook.php template. Before

<?php if($this->data['trackbackhtml']) print $this->data['trackbackhtml']; ?>
<body <?php if($this->data['body_ondblclick'])

<?php if($this->data['trackbackhtml']) print $this->data['trackbackhtml']; ?>
<?php $this->html('headscripts') ?>
<body <?php if($this->data['body_ondblclick'])

  • I just tested it on my local mediawiki 1.5.8 with bugfix in monobook.php and it always says no spelling mistakes found even if i put errors in. I contacted dev for this issue but for me its currently not working. --Sider 01:05, 26 April 2006 (PDT)
    • Did you add the required include to localsettings.php ? It is needed at 1.5 too (all Wiki extensions need to be added there
Sider, what wiki are you admin at? I want to check out what you've done to install this feature. --Levenbreech Vor 03:27, 26 April 2006 (PDT)
  • Its a local wiki, not available in web yet, but i followed the instructions strictly. Dev already contacted me that he has an idea whats the problem could be. --Sider 07:31, 27 April 2006 (PDT)
Sorry if this is a stupid question but isn't the point and idea of a wiki that fact that people can edit it online, how does one do that if it is local based. Also if I set you as admin on my wiki just for a bit could you install the spell checker because I'm really confused. I played around with it and its just not working right. --Levenbreech Vor 13:46, 27 April 2006 (PDT)
Rob has to install it HERE for it to work on any Editthis Wiki, as we do not have access to Local Settings.php
  • Ever thought about a company who uses an intranet with a wiki? You should be happy to have someone who tests it before Rob has unnecessary work to do. ;-) Dev just launched a new version which is working in my local wiki now and promised a second version at the end of the week because of a new version of googiespell on which this feature is based on. Rob should be able to install it here then. --Sider 08:17, 2 May 2006 (PDT)
Good point. It works great, doesn't it ? I got it working at my "Sandbox Wiki" here and can't wait to have it at my Fan Fiction wiki here Now we just need to wait for Rob to install the extension here. Renmiri 00:22, 3 May 2006 (PDT)

Fatal Error

At my Editthis site there seem to be some pages that can't be shown and when I try to go to it it comes up with a black white page with this at the top. "Fatal error: Allowed memory size of 52428800 bytes exhausted (tried to allocate 18133848 bytes) in /home/.olin/robkohr/wiki/includes/Image.php on line 1071" I was wondering if you knew of a solution that might fix it. Is there a script in place to parse a page (i.e. Intermap) for interwiki links? --Tometheus 08:38, 4 March 2006 (PST) (Wikitheus)

Nope, but the interwiki map is part of the database that comes with the mediawiki software, and you should have it available in your wiki already. In the long run I may have it so all of the wikis I host rely on a central interwiki table that will stay up to date with the interwiki map and allow for cross-linking between editthis.info wikis, but this is pretty low on the priority list.
Then there's a bug because I use something that works on others like wikipedia:RGB on Wikitheus and it just returns an edit link. Where is the InterWiki table listed so we can see what's on it? --Tometheus 09:59, 21 March 2006 (PST)
Can you add an interwiki link for "dcc" to "http://wiki.dccforall.com/$1  ?? Would like to use this on the JMRI wiki. Thanks. -Mitch March 22, 2006 @ 9:49AM PST
Nope, not done.. wikipedia: links still don't work... Unless you can point me to a page as I requested that shows us what the interwiki names are. I'm just using the simplest example that i.e. meta.wikimedia.org can use. --Tometheus 23:20, 29 March 2006 (UTC) (Wikitheus)
Crazy as it sounds, wikipedia is not part of the interwiki list included in mediawiki! For example wikibooks:Test works. I'll add wikipedia to the template db, but old wikis will have to do without the wikipedia interwiki linking until I make it so they all refer to one interwiki table.
Who do I go to to get some InterWiki links added to my wiki? Psychosis (Psycho Bonus Stage)
No one yet, but you can add yourself to this page, which I will be using in the future for updates: http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Intermap

Sensitive contents

I have a problem. My group, perhaps too rashly and naively, used a wiki page to discuss a sensitive topic, not thinking or even contemplating that anyone outside those involved would participate. We wanted to be inclusive, and use the beauty of the internet to make our process more fluid. However, we were a bit too quick to jump on the idea, and unfortunately, an outsider "infiltrated" our page. And, though this person's motives seemed genuine in that they "wanted to be helpful", we got worried about the sensitive nature of our topic, and kicked ourselves for choosing the wiki way. We of course deleted the current page, but the *history* section seems to be un-deletable. Is this true? Why is this the case? And if it is the case, should it be? Is there any way to delete *all* content? Sincerely, concerned-and-naive-would-be-wiki-person

You need not give up Wiki, just use the restricted pages extension. It restricts pages from views and edits.
To hide it now, unless Rob deletes the history from the DB for you, you can do a series of "Page Move", deleting the original page names. After you move it 3-4 times your "helper" won't be able to find it anymore. But don't forget to look before you delete the original as they redirect to the new page by default. I deleted some of my original pages this way Image:Grin.gif Renmiri 16:08, 2 April 2006 (PDT)

Wiki help needed

I would like to know how to edit the CSS/Javascript as mentioned here: http://www.editthis.info/wiki/index.php/Best_Designed so that I can make templates look like this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Template:WoW http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Template:NCV http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Template:DickyRobert http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Template:TotallyDisputed http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Template:NPOV

(all of which I am going to export when I set up my wiki).

The CSS of the Wikipedia is here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MediaWiki:Monobook.css and http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MediaWiki:Common.css

I just need to know how to edit them so my templates work properly on my wiki when I set it up. I haven't got one now, but will have soon. -- 03:48, 22 March 2006 (PST)

Hi, I'm Levenbreech Vor (the admin of Blank Club Encyclopedia) and I'm kind of confused. I don't see why you need javascript/css for these templates. I can make these templates just my using the regular wiki formatting. I thought that css was used basically for the layout of the wiki rather then the actual edits (that sentence didn't make much sense). Please clarify the problem on my talk page. --Levenbreech Vor 05:42, 22 March 2006 (PST)

MediaWiki 1.6 alpha

I am trying to add footnotes to this page: AShell. Both the methods described in wikipedia are not working.

That is an extension that needs to be added for it to work. I attempted to add it, but the code created errors, so I removed it. You might want to look here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Harvard_referencing to see how to do it with templates
Er, this is exactly how I have done it the link above, but it is not working.

Ah oh, by way of general feedback: Thanks for keeping the ads on the bottom of the page, rather than the side. When at the bottom, they are not intrusive and yet effective. 21:02, 23 March 2006 (PST)

No problem, there was a small but instant increase in income by making that change. I also like the fact that it doesn't squish the page in on the sides anymore.

rtml, plain_html, html in your wiki

The rtml works...but...only the admin can see it. All of the other non-admin users can't see the quicktime/flash/poll/what have you and they can see the raw coding. It is really ugly looking. What is the problem with the rtml tag? Thanks --Levenbreech Vor 05:11, 14 March 2006 (PST)

Sorry for the difficulty. It has been harder to secure this then expected. I thought the way it worked was that the page was rendered after editing and then other users would see it the same way. This turns out not to be the case. I changed the way the extension works now. Simply protect a page (using the protect tab at the top of the page) and then edit it. To render the code, the extension just checks to see if the page is protected. This should be enough to protect against abuse since only admins can edit protected pages.
Also, please use plain_html as the tags insted of rtml. rtml was the name of the tag when it was in testing phase and I perfer people use the new tag name - Thanks! Rob
Thanks. All the html is working great except for the poll. I can't figure it out. If you could fix it/tell me why it isn't working that would be great --Levenbreech Vor 13:30, 14 March 2006 (PST)
All fixed, it had to do with it being a template
The Template:poll page is working great now, thanks. However, The Poll on the Main Page is still showing up as html. Could you please fix that as well? --Levenbreech Vor 14:22, 14 March 2006 (PST)
After a while of looking at my main page (in between Total Annihilation games, definatly one of the best games ever!) I figured out that it was because my main page wasn't protected. The poll dilemma has been solved but it is kind of annoying to have to protect all the pages that have html on them (expecially when those pages are pages that you want to have editted). I understand why you are restricting html but for my wiki that shouldn't be a problem. On your eagerly awaited admin control panel could you have a "restrict html" option. Many thanks --Levenbreech Vor 16:09, 14 March 2006 (PST)

Pre-filled pages

I would very much like to see new wikis prefilled with appropriate info in certain pages such as Help:Contents, General_disclaimer, and especially Help:Editing. It would give editthis.info a much more professional feel. You could even (if it is technically possible) have these things as templates on the main namespace, so you could update them easily, but users could still ditch or subst: and edit them. --Calion 19:58, 14 March 2006 (PST)

You can export the page you like from Wikipedia, save it as XML and import to your Wiki. Pretty easy to do. See a sample of it 20:21, 14 March 2006 (PST) Renmiri
Of course. But the point is that this shouldn't have to be done for every new wiki created, as these pages will essentially be the same for every wiki, at least at first. -- Calion | Talk 07:23, 15 March 2006 (PST)
Starting Pages - Feel free to put pages here that contain content that should appear in all new wikis. Please name the pages [[Starting:PAGE NAME]]

Active and Popular wikis

Finally just a suggestion and not me kvetching about my wikis problems. The active wiki list is ranked by views, shouldn't it be ranked by edits? Or maybe even edits per views? If so then popular wikis should be ranked by views. These lists are misnomers currently. Just an idea --Levenbreech Vor 04:59, 15 March 2006 (PST)

For active, I felt the same way as you. After sorting by edits, and then sorting by page views, I found that the ones on the top of the page views were more robust. My theory on this is there are significatly less edits on a page then views, and on starting wikis, most of the edits are by one person perfecting the page. When you go to page views, the top pages are ones where lots of people are going to them and each making their own contribution. Sites with this quality end up being more intresting because of these different contributions, and so I like to put more highlight on them.
Popular is more about internet buzz for an individual wiki. The more external sites that link to a wiki, the more popular it is. It doesn't yeild the same quality as the active listing, but it give you an idea of what new things people are getting intrested in. It is sort of like google page rank where it just counts the links, but it focuses on links that were followed in the past two days.

Other then the <meta http-equiv="refresh" content="0;url=_____"> tag (with plain_html tags also) is there anyway to make a wiki formated external redirect?

You must be kidding.... really free?

Hello Rob! Now I was wondering if this webhosting is free since I accidentally made a wiki from this site! Now if it's not free please do whatever you have to, to delete it... But if it's free then please don't! Here's the link! Yeah um.. It's um a wiki of fancomics Bassium!

The basic service is free, so wiki away. :D
Ok so you're telling me this website I accidentally made is free? Completely? Then how the heck can you pay for it? It won't be that popular I'm sure no one will donate and I can't pay for it...
You may not believe it, but those little ads that you see at the bottom of the pages are enough to make this profitable. Sure, I won't be buy a Rolls any time soon, but it is enough to buy me lunch occasionally and take care of the server costs. -Rob

It's really very easy yo make the wiki and so I did... I didn't expect it to work that way it's extremely easy to make one, so all I'm wondering is do I have to pay at all! Or is I completely free? And when I say completely I mean free of charge have it as much as you want no payments due nothing free of charge wiki... So it is right? Bassium!

Thanks, my philosophy is registration for systems should be absurdly simple. What really does a wiki need more then a name? Of course once you get started you can get more detailed, but that can all be worked out later. In the future I will be adding some finer level controls that I may charge for, and may give less for free to future wikis (I would be hesitant too though), but I will never charge current wikis anything I initally gave them for free. That would be.... well ... uncool. -Rob
If you really like the service, feel free to donate.

Discussion List

Would a discussion list for the Admin's of Editthis wiki's be a good idea? It could be used for discussion about how to improve the service, scheduled down-time, etc. :This is it. Suggest away :) If there is an important message for everyone to see, it will appear at the top of every wiki page.

CheckUser suggestion - Privacy

Add CheckUser Is there any possibility CheckUser could be added for all wikis, so admins can check for sockpuppetry etc.? --Gulbrier 06:26, 1 March 2006 (PST)

The short answer is yes I could, but I am hesitant to. Though a few wikis are moderately large, most are pretty tiny, and I have yet to see evidence of this or any other type of abuse (nocking on digital wood). I prefer to respect user's privacy unless there is a pressing case where their privacy is infringing on the communities well being (and there is no other option). -Rob

URL gets my template preloaded= http://www.editthis.info/virtualsoil/index.php?action=edit&preload=Template:Newpage&editintro=Newintro&create=Create+new+page&title=anewpage

Form does not = http://www.editthis.info/virtualsoil/index.php/New_Page

The inputbox extension works so well for preload... Won't you reconsider and add it ? 20:03, 26 February 2006 (PST) Renmiri <inputbox> type=create default=Consider it done :)</inputbox> -Rob Thanks!!! :)Renmiri 08:11, 27 February 2006 (PST)

Overriding the Title of a Page

Many times the actual name of the page isn't pretty for orginazational reasons so you end up doing [[Uglyname|Formated Name]]. When you follow that link the title of the page is 'Uglyname'. Is there a way to override that? I've looked at all the MediaWiki documentation I could find without any luck. Shadetree 15:17, 26 February 2006 (PST)

There is no way that I know of to make the name not ugly other then just not naming it ugly. I understand the organization reasons, but perhaps using categories might be a little more helpful. Category:Some Category Name in you page will automatically group the page with all other ones in that category. What is nice is you can then put it in multiple categories and keep nice page names.

Block/protection log

Why does it put the text for why user is blocked in plain type:

no idea, but it looks fine.

Redirect URL

Hi! Can you change the redirect from www.virtualsoil.com from "spira" to my other Wiki below ?

Done -Rob

Border style

  • Is it just my browser, or has the gray background that appears at the top of the page disappeared?
It has but, I put it back in. I was just testing out an all white look
  • My template does not look like it should:

http://www.editthis.info/westmarewiki/index.php/Template:WoW compared to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Template:WoW

the borders do not appear on it! -- 06:22, 22 February 2006 (PST)

Not sure why. I use the same css as mediawiki with a few minor tweaks:

You can now use <plain_html>HTML CODE</plain_html> to insert html code into your page. You must protect your page to use them (logged in as admin, there will be a tab at the top of the page).

Can you code a opinion poll in a wiki? I can make them in html and javascript but neither are excepted in Mediawiki.

  • Can you do it in Flash ? 09:26, 15 February 2006 (PST)Renmiri
    • I can do it in flash but a wiki can't load flash directly onto a page. I want it on the wiki. --Levenbreech Vor 13:18, 15 February 2006 (PST)

Inputbox Extension

Can you add inputbox functionality to my Wiki, Virtualsoil wiki ? PS: You can delete my "old" Wiki: Spira Wiki 20:05, 14 February 2006 (PST)Renmiri

No hurry, I'm "making do" with Flash :-) 08:22, 16 February 2006 (PST)
Resolved also after Rob installed Inputbox. Image:Grin.gif

Could you add CheckUser privileges for us??

Log in as admin, go to special pages, and click on user rights management. You can enter in a user name and see what rights he has. BTW, you should change your admin password.

Also, I note that templates do not work. I was trying to get my template to work like this one: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Template:WoW but it did not work!! http://www.editthis.info/westmarewiki/index.php/Main_Page is my wiki!! --Lowerside 06:21, 20 February 2006 (PST)

Templates work fine (in fact I use three templates on the feedback page). You can reference templates on other wikis though. Just copy the template to your wiki to use it.

I've read and understand that you are working diligently on a control panel to for admins to use. I don't want to rush you or anything but my wiki was just vandalised with porn and I would appreciate it if you could create the control panel that would restrict edits and views quickly. Thanks --Levenbreech Vor 10:36, 16 February 2006 (PST)

Please include the link the wiki page that was attacked. This is the first reported case of it and I want to make sure it is the last. -Thanks, Rob
Evan Pryzant was the page. If you look in the history you will find some serious reverting/rollbacks by me, the admin of the wiki. Once again a control panel would be great. P.S. I have tried several wiki farms and this is my favorite so far.
Looks like someone in your club took a long time to write insults directed at you. The simplest solutions is to roll back, since it is easier for you then it is for them to write. In any case when the control panel is rolled out you will have a little more accountability, but really, I don't think it will stop things like this.
These jerks at my school have vandalized again. This time with several articles. I've blocked the IP address which means that when legitimate edits happen they will have to happen through a proxy server. Please get the control panel up (until then I would appreciate it if somebody would add those line to my localsettings.php) Thanks --Levenbreech Vor 16:57, 17 February 2006 (PST)

Private Wiki ?

Hi, good job. I just wanted to know if I am allowed to setup a private wiki for my compagny. That means that even reading will be restricted to registred people. Thanks

Well I reply to myself, after rading this page, I understand that this feature will be allowed by the control panel, can you please confirm this ? thanks.
Yep, thanks - Rob

HTML Conversion

Not a problem, just a wish

Can you add this Html to Wiki converter here ? I converted this into this using this utility and it didn't look half bad! It would be great for my Fan Fiction oriented Wiki, as members could save from Word to html, convert it to Wiki with the utility and upload it to the site 20:14, 14 February 2006 (PST)Renmiri

Its pretty cool, you could add it to the Useful Tools page and link that page off the help if you like. The editing page has enough features as is though, and I think this makes more sense as an external utility -Thanks, Rob

Hacked Account

Someone's account on Fswiki had the password guessed, and now the admin's IP and username is blocked from editing, causing the vandalism to be irreversible. Please unblock all usernames and IP addresses from the block list. ~~Burningember, FSwiki user and friend of owner

My account on that wiki has been blocked as well. Just create another wiki and change the password before doing anything else. -Rob

Is it possible for me to upload my own version ? 21:41, 15 February 2006 (PST)Renmiri

Nope, there is only one copy of it and everyone uses it.

Google Ad sidebar is broken

The Google Ad sidebar is broken in both Firefox (1.0.7) and Opera (8.5.1 - latest version). The sidebar is displayed to high so that it obscures the "log in|log out" link. I know that the Internet Explorer is the most used browser. But it is not a choice an experienced user would make: It lacks safety, usability, speed and is not capable of displaying html correct. So any site should display correct with the most common alternatives; for MS Windows, theese are Firefox and Opera.

Wow, I don't use IE, and I don't even use windows. Try not to judge too quickly. It is a little high, and I am using firefox to view it, but the login link is fine. I will nudge the ads down a little when I get a chance. In the mean time lay off the coffee and ponder the recursiveness of the GNU acronym until calmness returns. -Rob
Well, I might need to admit that my formulation was a bit harsh. Anyway - it is lower now and I am amazed by the fast response. --Gabriel 13:17, 15 February 2006 (PST)
Its cool, I feel the same way when some website totally doesn't work in anything other then IE. The change was cake though, and just required a little tweak to the css, which I of course did in emacs ;) -Rob (hoping not to start an emacs/vi flame war :)

Wiki Templats Page

Instead of just adding a Template it adds an entire Wiki! 09:26, 15 February 2006 (PST)Renmiri

This is more of a terminology problem. These are templates for entire wikis, not template pages. But we should have a page for Templates.

Hacked Account

I no longer have privilages, just create another wiki

I don't seem to be able to get a custom CSS/JS setup to work, either by modifying common.css or my personal monobook.css; suggestions? (I'm an admin for several of Wikipedia's projects, and I'd like to have my same skin and javascript features here.)

For the left hand side, I went to MonoBook.php and copied the divs for toolbox (I think there are two nested levels) and pasted the copies right below the ending for the toolbox div. Then I just edited them to add in my boxes on the left hand side. For the google adsense, this is what I copied from here

I'm getting an error connecting to my wiki:

A database query syntax error has occurred. This may indicate a bug in the
software. The last attempted database query was:
(SQL query hidden)
from within function "SiteStatsUpdate::doUpdate". MySQL returned error "1205:
Lock wait timeout exceeded; try restarting transaction (editthis.editthis.info)".
Which wiki are you using. How frequently has it occurred? -Rob
It was the ForeignLiving wiki. I noticed this only for a few minutes. Otherwise there are frequent php error messages that also go away after a while.
I tried hard to recreate the problem (opened ever link in a new tab as quickly as possible). But I haven't been able to. Let me know if you encounter it again. Thanks -Rob

  • I suppose I could RTFM :P but could you give me a quick solution to restrict the heading depth in the table of contents. For instance, if my articles have too many 3rd level subheadings and I want the TOC to show just till the 2nd level headings, is there a quick way of accomplishing that? Thanks. Mansoorjafry 14:21, 7 February 2006 (PST)
I don't know if there is a way to automattically do that, but there are some alternatives on this page. A nice trick if you are lazy about RTFM is to google using a keyword for MediaWiki. For example for you I did this search:
MediaWiki "__TOC__"
It will usually put you on the right track --User:RobKohr

Disk space

  • The new features, especially the upload space is really great! I really like this service. I just hope the server has enough juice to keep supporting the 500+ (presumably mostly inactive) wikis. By the way, how does one delete a wiki? I created a few while trying out myself. Mansoorjafry 13:54, 6 February 2006 (PST)
Don't worry about the inactive wikis. A robot will tidy up the lose ends shortly.

Allow input box and uploading

Please can you allow this?

*The 'upload files' function says it's disabled. What's the scoop, boss? ~CoD
::Currently is, this will be a future addition for premium accounts - User:RobKohr

Oh the wonders of reading. All about the storage and bandwidth costs, nasty things those.

Thanks for replying for me :) The thing is that MediaWiki doesn't have a storage limiting system, and so I am programming it. My goal is to make it so you can upload whatever you like: movies, sounds, etc. If I just opened it up with close to 500 wikis where anyone can upload anything... well lets just say it could be messy. I am working on it though. :) Thanks, --RobKohr 21:13, 1 February 2006 (PST)
Uploading is now functional!!! You start with 5 MB and I am going to make it so you can upgrade

Wanted pages

  • Could you have a most wanted section like in wikicities. It would list broken links by how many pages are liking to them.

I think <math></math> markup has been disabled.

Done - doesn't use <math></math> tags, instead uses <m></m> Take a look at Help:Math for more info.

Formatting images?

There doesn't seem to be a way to format images on editthis? ie. center an image, move it to left of the page with text to the right, etc. This would be really handy. Maybe there is a way, but in the help section it doesnt mention one.

I am going to include a small amount of storage space for free accounts soon. Then you will be able to use all the formating stuff that goes with the Image: tag --RobKohr 08:48, 26 January 2006 (PST)
Sounds awesome :D
Though not really resolved, this relates to the unresolved uploads.--RobKohr 08:32, 2 February 2006 (PST)

List of users?

This isn't exactly necessary, but is there any way to view a list of members on my wiki?

-Not Rob but I can answer that for you. Go to special pages and then to the link marked "User List"

Thanks - Rob

Renaming a wiki

Is it possible to rename my wiki? Or is it possible to delete the wrong named wiki completely?

Nope, just create another with the name that you want. They don't really take up any space and their are plenty of unused wikis, other won't make a difference.--RobKohr 12:28, 28 January 2006 (PST)

Spam error? Mysql error?

I'm getting an error upon adding content to a page. If I make a minor change to the existing content, it works fine. I'll also try to trace if a certain block of text is causing this. I can also send you the text file of the content if you want.
Addendum: I noticed it crashes because of the word 'ph arma cies' (without the spaces, it was crashing here too). Could this be a misconfigured spam-list?

Warning: mysql_query(): supplied argument is not a valid MySQL-Link resource in /home/.olin/robkohr/site_settings.php on line 145
This is from the spam checker. 90% of spam right now contains stuff regarding pharmacies. I don't want spammers to realize that they are being caught though, because it would be easy to side step. At first I blocked them, but the false positives were a problem. Now I just make it look like the system is broken so they just go away and spam some other wiki system. If you want a little hack to avoid this, just enter the following:

Other than Paypal

  • Provision of an alternative method of donation, other than paypal. Like Moneybookers that seems quite common.
Good suggestion. I checked them out, and I can apparently transfer money by local bank transfer to them, and then they pass it on. I don't have a credit card, and an international bank wire/post office transfer will cost me 15GBP.
I will look into some other funding options. Right now paypal is enough -User:RobKohr

MediaWiki Config

  • Knowing what is not possible in comparison with Mediawiki installation. For example, is it possible to have multiple categories ?
The installation is the standard one without the upload ability. I am not sure what you mean by multiple categories... you can categorize pages.-User:RobKohr

Premium Info

  • What is the difference between a premium account, and a regular account?
The info for premium is now in the sidebar. -User:RobKohr

Linking to external sites

  • It would be nice to be able to link to other sites
To link to another site just do this [http://www.google.com Google] and you will get this Google. Just note that you use a single square bracket instead of double for external linking, and you put a space between the url and the link label.

Editing navigation bar (on the right hand side of the page)

  • (I'm not sure if a post like this belongs in a separate messageboard, I don't know of any, but ...) Is there a way to customize the links in the left panel? For example, links like "Community portal", "Current events" etc. are not relevant to my wiki. How do I remove them?
This is a new feature of MediaWiki. You can edit the side bar by editing the page MediaWiki:Sidebar --RobKohr 12:50, 23 January 2006 (PST)

Editing help

  • In a newly-created wiki, when editing a page, the link "Editing help" opens up a blank page. It would be nice if it contains some pre-filled info by default, or instructions on how to initialise it.
I changed the template, it now contains some help in the Help:Contents page -Thanks --RobKohr 12:50, 23 January 2006 (PST)

Measuring Popularity

  • The "Top Wikis of the Week" shows wikis sorted by popularity, measured by external site links to the wiki. How are these external links detected? I'm a bit surprised (although pleasantly) at such a large link figure, especially since my wiki doesn't appear in the search engines.
I am guessing that your wiki is the foreignliving one based upon its huge popularity. My system just tracks links based upon the referrer log and striping the urls down to just the domain name. Looking at the log it seems that most of your links came from yahoo mail, and it also seems that yahoo mail has an infinite amount of sub-domains associated with it (us.f519.mail.yahoo.com, us.f347.mail.yahoo.com, etc) each associated with probably a set of users. Since my system figured they were all different sites, it upped the count of links. Really my link trackback is an easily hacked hack. A better one would go to the referring site and see if a link really exists, but I don't think it is that important. In a way it did really gauge your wiki's popularity, since your link existed in so many mailboxes and each mailbox was its own site that people followed links from. So congrats on having the most popular wiki :) --RobKohr 12:50, 23 January 2006 (PST)
Oh and activity is just based on page views --RobKohr 12:53, 23 January 2006 (PST)
