Additional comments: LOUISVILLE, KY - Tim Darst, Transit Director for the Coalition for the Advancement of Regional Transportation (CART) will be marking World Car Free Day (September 22) by riding 200 miles on Transit Authority of River City (TARC) buses to highlight the need for expanded transit options for the citizens of Louisville Metro. Mr. Darst will be accepting donations per mile with all proceeds going to Family Scholar House (formerly Project Women) and is challenging others to do the same.
TARC has been cutting services in recent years due to the increase in fuel prices. TARC has not had an increase in funding to offset these costs. Low-income people of Louisville and the surrounding areas are faced with fewer options for getting to work at a time when gas prices are high and getting higher.
CART is a non-profit advocacy organization whose mission is to promote multimodal transportation through advocacy and education. CART has been investigating options for increasing funding for TARC and for adding more transportation options for the citizens of Louisville.
Family Scholar House (formerly Project Women) is a collaborative organization that provides housing to single parents who are experiencing homelessness and supports them in obtaining a baccalaureate degree, thereby enabling them to break the cycle of poverty for themselves and their children. The World Car Free Day funds will be used to purchase transit passes for those single parents to attend school.

Title: Portland National PARK(ing) Day
Date: September 19th
Events planned so far: Portlanders have yet another reason to park their cars! On September 19th, 2008 Portland will reclaim the streets for National PARK(ing) Day, a one-day celebration where artists, citizens and businesses collaborate to temporarily transform parking spots into parks, returning the urban landscape to its natural form. Join Hotel Monaco Portland, Red Star, Hotel Vintage Plaza, Pazzo Ristorante and The Trust For Public Land as they help bring awareness to sustainability and urban livability issues.
Public participation is encouraged! Roll out the grass and put down your very own park. Local sponsors of the event will be closing downtown's SW 5th Avenue for the day to decorate more than a dozen parking spaces on the street between Washington and Alder. The day will culminate at this site with a "Party in the Park" featuring a bluegrass band, pork roast and a Beer Garden sponsored by the Oregon Brewers Guild, from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Play hopscotch, take a ride down the slide and most importantly, come celebrate keeping Portland green while raising money for The Trust for Public Land. http://upcoming.yahoo.com/event/833363/

Title: Ashland carfree day & Commuter Challenge/ Try Transit Week
Date: Sept.22nd - Oct.6th
Events planned so far: Join us on Oak Street downtown Monday Sept. 22 for a block party and kickoff celebration!
The Rogue Valley Transportation District (RVTD) will roll out a week of events promoting public transportation and the City of Ashland will kick off the Commuter Challenge, a two-week event where individuals work together to reduce miles traveled in the single-driver car.
Commuter Challenge: For two weeks starting Sept. 22, through Oct. 6, Ashlanders can work together to reduce miles traveled in the single-driver auto.
The goal is to get to work (or the grocery store, or wherever it is you go!) using a different mode of transportation besides driving in your car alone. Walk, bike, skateboard, carshare, telecommute, or get to work by some mode that will reduce single-driver vehicle miles. If you work at home or dont work, walk/bike/carshare to the grocery store, the gym, or where ever it is you need to go. Log your miles for two weeks on our web page (to be announced !) or simply write them down and send them to ashlandcarfreeday08@gmail.com and we will tally the total and publish your contribution to a safer, cleaner, healthier Ashland. Sign up your sports team or civic group and highlight your commitment to a better community at the closing celebration Oct. 6.
Carsharing counts with two or more in the car: save gas! be social!
Local merchants can donate prizes and refreshments for commuters/ participants: make new customers! Promote your business!
Contact person: Conctact Steve Ryan to sign up your workforce or family for this fun, civic-minded participatory event.
