In fact, at the time, Columbus thought he had reached Asia. It wasn until his third trip that he realized he had discovered an entirely new land. The first Columbus Day celebration took place in 1792, when New York City Columbian Order, which we know as Tammany Hall, held an event to commemorate the historic landing 300th anniversary. Columbus Day first became a state holiday in Colorado in 1907. Why Colorado? Many Italian-Americans journeyed to Colorado in the late 1800s in search of wealth and land ownership. By 1905, when Pueblo held the first Columbus Day parade in the state, nearly 14 percent of the population was Italian-American. Recognizing the politics of opportunity, Senator Casimiro Barela, one of the first Hispanic Colorado senators, sponsored a bill in connection with Denver resident Angelo Noce proclaiming Columbus Day to be held as a public holiday on October 12. Columbus Day became a federal holiday in 1937.
