General History
When the Great Fall occured, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints was hit pretty hard. The United States of America, on whome the Church relied for the civil rights protections for nearly 200 years, had lost most, if not all, contact with the western side of the North American continent. The Church's organizational structure and general disaster preparedness, both commandments direct from the prophets of the Church, allowed it's members to ride through the disaster relatively unscathed.
One thing the Church was not prepared for, however, was the sudden and inexplicable encroachment of verdent forests on what was normally desert land. The forests (see Isstara) swiftly overtook enough parts of Utah that the Church leadership felt it best to abandon Utah. Using all of it's conciderable resources, the leadership of the Church moved the entire management operations to Las Vegas, the second largest concentration of Saints on the North American continent, and shut down it's Utah temples as a safety measure. It turned out they needn't have worried, as while the forrests occupied every other part of Utah, the temples were left as they were, solitary buildings amidst a huge mass of forest.
As the rest of the western United States began to crumble into seperate states, Deseret, as the Mormons had taken to calling the new Las Vegas territory, did it's best to maintain contact with the United States by sending emissaries through Mexico, which thanks to missionary efforts before The Great Fall was very friendly to the Church.
