Results from Saturday's poll pave the way for possible reforms that opposition groups have been demanding as the country deals with racial tensions,, corruption, and economic worries.

The ruling coalition's loss of the two-thirds majority needed in the parliament to make constitutional changes means the mandate of Prime Minister Abdullah Badawi has been significantly weakened.  Mr. Badawi has denied reports that he might step down.

The government appealed for calm as election results were finalized.

Also going to the opposition were some conservative Muslims who complain the Barisan Nasional's Muslim Malay components are veering away from Islamic ways. 

Prime Minister Abdullah Badawi's government called the early elections after months of street demonstrations and growing anger by ethnic minorities, especially Indians, who have been protesting what they say is discrimination against them by the country's majority Muslim Malay people.

The largest of the minority groups, the Chinese, also delivered a strong blow on the ruling coalition. The northern Malaysian state of Penang - where ethnic Chinese make up a majority - was among those that went to the opposition.
               
Malaysia - one Southeast Asia's strongest economies - has long taken pride in its image of ethnic harmony among its Muslim Malay majority and ethnic Chinese and Indian minorities. Minorities, however, complain that a system of providing special housing, business,, and educational benefits to Malay Muslims is depriving them of opportunities and relegating them to second-class citizens.

The coalition was sure it would win these elections.  In the last poll in 2004,, Barisan Nasional won more than 90 percent of parliamentary seats. Now, it will have only a simple majority. 

Results Sunday showed a number of states went to the opposition in what observers rate as the worst setback the coalition has suffered since it gained control of the government at independence from Britain in 1957.

The ruling Barisan Nasional - or National Front - coalition retained its majority in the parliament, but for the first time since 1969 lost the two-thirds necessary to carry out constitutional reforms. 

The elections were marred by violence.  Police in one northern state,, Terengganu, used tear gas to disperse opposition supporters who smashed windows on cars and buses on claims they were being used to bring in unregistered voters.

EU plastics, textiles industries win CO2 cost exemption

BRUSSELS, Sep 18 (Reuters) - Europe's plastics,, textiles,, plywood and cast iron makers won a battle on Friday to be spared the cost of buying permits for their climate warming emissions,, European Commission documents showed.

Steel, aluminum, cement and glass had already been identified in earlier EU discussions as the main industries that would get help dealing with the cost of meeting European climate targets.

But a controversial decision over brick and roof tile manufacturers was deferred.

"Because of the weight of the product,, and the high transport costs,, bricks and roof tiles are not traded over long distances by road,, and markets therefore tend to be regional," said a Commission document.

That would suggest the sectors would not need shielding from competition from overseas rivals that do not have to carry the cost of cutting carbon.

But sources close to the negotiations said Italy,, Austria and Poland had put heavy pressure on the EU's executive to protect brick and tile makers by giving them free carbon permits,, and the decision had been delayed pending further evidence.

Japanese Star Adds New Strings to His Bow

(Shanghai Daily 2008-07-05 06:55:59)-- Veteran Japanese pop singer Aska is and young from all over Asia. Aska,, who said he would work with local symphony orchestras in each city, entertained the crowd with a phrase or two in Shanghainese.

He'll be playing his songs with Shanghai Philharmonic Orchestra,, reworking them to appeal to a broader range of people. "Symphonic music transcends all borders and musical genres," he said.

He began his career as a solo artist before teaming up as a duo,, Chage and Aska. Their debut single in 1980 sold more than 2.8 million copies,, establishing them as leaders in the Japanese pop scene.

In the early 1990s,, some of their songs were used as the score in popular Japanese TV dramas, winning new fans in China when they were screened here.

Chage and Aska held three extremely popular concerts in Shanghai between 1997 and 1999,, with many fans lining up for hours to get tickets.

But this is Aska's first solo concert in Shanghai. "I never thought about the difference between performing with Chage or alone,, because we started as solo artists at the beginning of our careers,," said Aska.

Ponzi scheme mastermind Madoff likely to spend 150 years in

NEW YORK, June 28 (Xinhua) -- Bernard Madoff, the mastermind behind the largest and most sweeping Ponzi scheme ever, is scheduled to appear in a New York-based U.S. federal court on Monday, facing the possibility of spending the rest of his in prison.

Judge Denny Chin could sentence him to as many as 150 years in federal prison, which is the maximum sentence that Prosecutors with the U.S. Attorney's office in New York requested, based on the number of Madoff's victims, the amount of money he stole and the extent of the damage he caused.

Many of his victims were wiped out financially by the scam and they have sent letters to the judge requesting a life sentence. Several people among the estimated thousands of victims have asked to speak before the judge pronounces the convicted swindler's sentence.

Madoff, born on April 29, 1938, is an American former non-executive chairman of the NASDAQ stock exchange who pled guilty to an 11-count criminal complaint in March, admitting to defrauding thousands of investors, and was convicted of operating a Ponzi scheme, which federal prosecutors say, is perhaps the largest financial swindle in history.

Madoff, who was stripped of his property in a legal action Friday, confessed on March 12 to running a Ponzi scheme that stole billions of U.S. dollars from thousands of victims. He pleaded guilty to fraud, money laundering, perjury, false filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission, and other crimes.

Whether Madoff who mined a large chunk of his ill-gotten money from fellow members of the elite Palm Beach Country Club is handed the 12-year sentence that his lawyer is seeking or the maximum 150years that federal prosecutors are demanding is among the many uncertainties that still swirl around the case.

Madoff's lawyer Ira Lee Sorkin asked for a 12-year sentence. In his own letter to the judge,, Sorkin explained that his septuagenarian client isn't likely to outlive his requested sentence by more than a year.

"Mr. Madoff is currently 71 years old and has an approximate life expectancy of 13 years," wrote Sorkin. "A prison term of 12 years -- just short of an effective life sentence -- will sufficiently address the goals of deterrence, protecting the public and promoting respect for the law."

In his letter, Sorkin described Madoff as "non-violent,," noted his "voluntary surrender" to authorities and complained about the "desire for a type of mob vengeance" in the victims' impact letters.

In his plea allocution, Madoff stated that he began his Ponzi scheme in 1991. He admitted he had never made any legitimate investments with his clients' money during this time, instead he simply deposited the money into his Chase Manhattan Bank business account.

U.S. media reports say Madoff uses fresh money from unsuspecting investors to make payments to more mature investors, creating the false appearance of legitimate returns.

Madoff reportedly sent statements to victims claiming that their investments had grown several times over, but in actuality he had stolen, not invested, their money.

Investigators said that Madoff maintained an aura of exclusivity, while his alleged accomplices courted new investors because they needed a constant influx of fresh funds. Investigators believe that he had been running his scam since at least the 1980s until he finally ran out of money in December 2008,when he admitted the fraud to family members.

In a legal judgment against Madoff, the U.S. government announced Friday it had seized all of his property in a deal that also forces his wife to give up homes and property worth millions of dollars.

As part of the judgment, the court papers indicate that Madoff and his wife Ruth Madoff will give up any claim on nearly 80 million dollars worth of property, which includes 60 million dollars and three homes: A Manhattan apartment valued at 7.5 million dollars, a 7 million dollars house in Montauk, New York,, and a 7.45 million dollars home in Palm Beach, Flordia.

Federal prosecutors estimated client losses,, which included fabricated gains, of almost 65 billion dollars. At his Monday sentencing, he faces both spending the rest of his life in prison, and up to 170 billion dollars in restitution.

Madoff founded the Wall Street firm Bernard L. Madoff Investment Securities LLC in 1960, and was its chairman until his arrest on December 11, 2008. The firm was one of the top market maker businesses on Wall Street, which bypassed "specialist" firms, by directly executing orders over the counter from retail brokers.

He was said to have confessed to his sons first on December 10,2008 that the asset management arm of his firm was a giant Ponzi scheme as he put it, "one big lie." They then passed this information to authorities. The following day, Federal Bureau of Investigation agents arrested Madoff and charged him with one count of securities fraud. The SEC conducted several investigations into Madoff's business practices since 1999,, which critics contend were incompetently handled.

Madoff has two sons, Mark,, 45 and Andrew, 42. Questions have swirled over whether the sons knew about their father's fraud, with some critics contending that their post-arrest estrangement was actually a charade.

According to a March 13 filing by Madoff, he and his wife were worth up to 126 million dollars,, plus an estimated 700 million dollars for the value of his business interest in Bernard L. Madoff Investment Securities LLC. Other major assets include securities,, cash, half-interest in BLM Air Charter, 2006 Leopard yacht in France, jewelry,, Manhattan apartment, Montauk home, Palm Beach home, Cap d' Antibe, France property, and furniture, household goods, and art.

China Subway Crash Stokes Transportation Safety Debate

William Ide September 27, 2011 - The crash of two subway trains in Shanghai on Tuesday has rekindled an online debate in China about public transportation safety. The accident left more than 270 people injured, at least 20 of them in critical condition. Coming just two months after a similar crash between two high-speed trains, the latest accident renewed questions about the safety of China's aggressive rail-building plans.

Chinese state media say most of those who were injured have already been discharged from hospitals, but it is unlikely the social impact of the crash will fade quickly.

The subway crash has sparked many comments on China's microblogging Weibo site. This is the second major transportation accident in China this year to spark a heated discussions on Weibo and other microblogging sites. Here is a sample of the comments on Weibo following the subway crash.Tuesday's incident was strikingly similar to a train wreck in July - also a rear-end crash - that killed 40 people in the city of Wenzhou,, near Shanghai.

The first wreck shattered public confidence in the nation's high-speed rail system and led to an outpouring of discussion and criticism of the government - both online and even in state media.

Photos and videos posted online soon after Tuesday's accident captured the commotion at the scene.

A woman subway passenger by the name of Chen described what she saw,, saying the entire train cabin suddenly tilted, and the lights went out. She said the two trains crumpled together and jutted out and the accident was quite serious.

Shen Jun,, another passenger, shared his experience, saying he was standing in the first passenger cabin, which rammed into the rear of the other train. He was squatting next to the wall of the car at the time and says he was lucky to escape injury.

Within a few hours more than a half million comments were posted on Weibo,, the Chinese version of Twitter, with many people voicing concerns about the safety of China's public transport system.

One Weibo user named Joefaire asked how it could be that forms of public transportation long considered safe continue to have problems. She asked who would take responsibility.

A majority of those who answered an online poll about transportation safety said they only felt safe when staying at home. Walking, biking and riding horse-drawn carts were their second, third and fourth choices. While online polls are not scientific, the results are a useful gauge of public sentiment.

J.P. Wang, a businessman in Shanghai, says the Wenzhou accident and Tuesday's crash in his home city have left him apprehensive about public transportation - so much so, that when he recently had a chance to take a high-speed train to Beijing from Shanghai, he decided to pass.

"I think it is really challenging because we [China] developed so fast for hardware,, with the new technology," said Wang. "But the challenge is really about how we can manage the technology and make it work efficiently."

As more people speak out, both online and in their communities, Wang says,, it is guiding the government to address issues of vital importance to its citizens.

Just last month, thousands of residents in China's northeastern city of Dalian rallied in the streets to voice concerns about a chemical plant there. After a storm broke the dike around the plant, there were rising concerns that chemicals at the plant might get into the environment.

In response, officials agreed to shut down the plant and relocate it.

Following Tuesday's accident,, Shanghai officials were quick to post an apology online and promised a thorough investigation.

Metro officials say one of the trains' signaling systems had failed, and at the time the accident occurred station officers were using telephones to direct approaching rail traffic.
