Background

Emmett Honeycutt escaped a then deeply homophobic Hazlehurst, Mississippi forced out by his parents, at the age of 15 and traveled to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania where he managed to escape the streets through the kindness of strangers and much luck. He would take up residence in Mt. Lebanon, Pennsylvania, where he has resided since and served as mayor and as Congressman for the 18th Congressional District of Pennsylvania. He has represented the 18th since 2011.

Prior to serving as Speaker, Honeycutt assisted former House Speaker Simone Wentworth with her duties as the Speaker pro tempore with remarkable effectiveness. His skill in administering the House and taking over the full duties of the Speakership following the tragic death of Speaker Wentworth led Democrats to select him as the 63rd Speaker of the House. In 2015, following a short Speakership by Nicole Peebles, House Democrats elected him again as the 65th Speaker of the House.

Speaker

In 2014, Emmett Honeycutt became the first homosexual to serve as Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives, succeding deceased Christine Roberts. As the highest ranking elected homosexual in American history, he is second in the line of presidential succession.

In the opening hours following his first election to the Speaker's chair, Speaker Honeycutt ushered in a new era - one that will take the country a new way forward with an agenda that reflects American priorities, is accountable to the American people, and is fiscally responsible.

With Democrats in the majority in both the House and Senate for the first time in 6 years, Speaker Honeycutt and his leadership team are addressing the challenging issues facing the American people after years of inaction.

Vision

Speaker Emmett Honeycutt is leading House Democrats in the charge for a New Way Forward for America. Focused on addressing the urgent and real priorities of the American people, he has unified House Democrats around key issues that will provide all hard-working Americans with national and economic security.

Energy Independence - Lower Gas Prices

Free America from dependence on foreign oil and create a cleaner environment with initiatives for energy-efficient technologies and domestic alternatives such as biofuels. End tax giveaways to Big Oil companies and enact tough laws to stop price gouging.

College Access for All

Make college tuition deductible from taxes, permanently. Cut student loan interest rates. Expand Pell Grants.

Life-Saving Science

Promote stem cell research that offers real hope to millions of American families who suffer from devastating diseases.

Real Security At Home and Overseas

Reclaim American leadership with a tough, smart plan to transform failed Republican administration policies in the Middle East, Asia, and around the world. Double the size of Special Forces to destroy terrorist networks like al Qaeda. Provide real security against threats from domestic terrorists instead of the sham that is the current state of transportation security. Rebuild a state-of-the-art military capable of projecting power wherever necessary. Fully man, train, and equip our National Guard and our police, firefighters and other first responders. Honor our commitments to our veterans.
