After 5 successful years as District Attorney, Comfort decided to run for the Mississippi Valley legislature from his Mississippi district. First facing a conservative Republican, Marcus Jamble, and a moderate Democrat, Harry Deant, he was able to convince the first to drop out and endorse him. In election day, he defeated Deant by a high margin, getting the vote of most Republicans and independents.
