Paul Colin Danforth was born on April 14th, 1963, in Boston, Massachusetts. His father David was an investment banker, while his mother Ruth stayed at home to take care of Paul and his 3 siblings. As a teenager, Paul was an excellent student and active participant in student government, winning election as Vice President and President of his school's Student Council. In 1979, he was accepted into Milton Academy, a top preparatory school in Milton, Massachusetts, where he spent the last 2 years of his high school education before being accepted into Georgetown University.
Paul spent 4 years at Georgetown, and in 1986 graduated with a Bachelor's Degree in Government. He was then accepted into the Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University, where in 1988 he gained a Master in Public Policy Degree. During his 2 years at Harvard, Paul also served as an editor of the Harvard Political Review. It was at Harvard that he met his future wife Susan, whom he later married in 1990 after moving back to Boston a year before. After moving back to his hometown, Paul decided to become a consultant to McKinsey & Company, where he advised Fortune 500 companies and foreign governments.
In 1996, he was elected to the Massachusetts State Senate, facing no opposition in the primary and winning by a landslide in the general election. He remained as a State Senator until being elected to the U.S. Congress in 2000. In that race, as in his campaign for State Senate 4 years prior, he faced no primary opposition, and defeated his Republican general election opponent by a large margin.
