Daniel James McCree (born Sep. 28, 1961) was a United States Congressman representing New York State's 28th congressional district from 2016 until his sudden retirement in 2018. He previously served as New York State Senator, New York Assemblyman and Mayor of Rochester, NY.

Early Life and College

McCree was born in September 1961 in Queens, New York City, New York, the son of Aiden McCree, an immigrant from Scotland and his wife Lyndsey McCree. Together with his three brothers and two sisters, Daniel McCree grew up in a very catholic, working class environment. The McCree family owned a small diner in South Queens where Daniel and his siblings had to begin working at an early age. He still managed to graduate high school with exceptional grades and was awarded a scholarship for New York University. He graduated NY University in 1983 with a B.A. in Political Science.

Military Service

Following his graduation from college McCree served in the United States Navy from 1983 to 1986 as a naval aviator and flight instructor. In 1986, he transferred to the Naval Reserve and continued his naval service in flying and administrative assignments as a drilling reservist until 1993. He eventually transferred to the Individual Ready Reserve when he entered public life and retired with the rank of Captain in 2007.

Political- and Private Business Career

In 1993 McCree was elected Mayor of his chosen home of Rochester, New York. He served in that position until 2000 when he successfully campaigned to become a member of the New York Assembly. He served two years as Assembly man and in the 2002 elections was elected to the New York State Senate. He served there until 2010. He refused to run for another term despite good polling numbers citing his believe that 8 years in the Senate were “just enough for a single man.”

Upon his retirement from the New York State Senate, McCree founded the “McCree&Kaiser Consulting Group”, based in New York City and Rochester, together with his old friend Alexander Kaiser. The group specialized both on political and economic consulting. He served as CEO of McCree&Kaiser since 2010.

Born into a big family with three brothers and two sisters, all but one older than him, McCree married Elizabeth Parry in 1983. The couple had met in college and got married only weeks after graduation. Elizabeth was born and grew up in Wales and only moved to New York for college. Initially she had planned a one year stay at the New York University but transferred entirely upon meeting her later husband. She graduated NY University in 1982 and works as a social worker. In Rochester she owns a childcare facility.

The McCrees have two children. The oldest, their son Aiden (named after his grandfather), was born in 1986 and after high school attended Columbia University where he graduated in 2008 with a B.A. in business. He earned a scholarship to Harvard Business School and received his M.A. in business administration in 2010. Since then he has worked as Jr. Partner for his father’s consulting firm.

Daniel and Elizabeth McCree’s second child, their daughter Isobel was born in 1990. Following her graduation from high school she enrolled at Champlain College in Burlington, Vermont and earned her B.A. Journalism and Political Science in 2012 and her M.A. in Journalism in 2014. She lives in New York City and worked for a well-known paper before becoming Communications Director for her father's congressional office in Washington.
