Early Life and Family
Childhood and Early Life
Rowan Inverness "Nessie" O'Connell was born on July 19, 1983 in Boston, Massachusetts to Fletcher and Caledonia O'Connell. The eldest of four, she exhibited from a young age both a sharp intellect and a fiery temper. She was heavily active in community theatre and with her high school drama club and debate team—both of which helped her channel temper into passion.
Family
Her parents had both been immigrants--Fletcher from Ireland, Caledonia from Scottland, and had shared a healthy distrust of all things English. Fletcher made sure the children were raised Irish Catholic. Caledonia made sure the children were raised with a strong sense of values and responsibility. Her father is now deceased.
Nessie has three younger siblings.
Brother Logan (born 1986) went to college in Michigan and got a job doing public relations for GM's research and development department. When GM began to fall, Logan began working for an SRI--a Socially Responsible Investment firm. During his service with that firm he married Senator Morey's daughter Isobel. In 2018, Logan was hired as chief of staff to the recently elected Governor Kennedy.
Sister Shannon (born 1989) remains in Boston. She is currently teaching at an elementary school in Southie. She is a gifted singer, a dutiful daughter, and the only democrat in the family. (She voted for Amanda Renzetti in the 2012 democratic primary.)
Sister Maggie (born 1992) went to college in California where she remained and got a job as a secretary, mainly so her mother wouldn't be able to tell her how to live her life. She is engaged to Thomas Corcoran (sp?), pitcher for the San Diego Padres and son of former congressman Jimmy Corcoran. So far she has not inherited a fu-manchu grip.
Eduaction
Higher Education
Nessie got her Bachelor of Arts degree in Theatre Arts from Bryn Mawr college in Pennsylvania.
Political Career
Gloucester
Out of college, Nessie got a job working for Gloucester City Councilman Fischer Zoffman.
After a few years, largely in response to her alarm at Gloucester's budget troubles and pregnancy rates in public schools, she ran for and won the 2008 race for Mayor of Gloucester. She served until 2012,
