With both his parents working, young Dan Morey spent a lot of time with his grandparents who tought him the German language - which he is fluent in up to this day. He also speaks bits of French and Spanish. Morey has three brothers and one sister. The oldest of his three brothers, Sonny Morey moved to Miami where he went on to become a Detective working vice. Richard Morey served 15 years with the NYPD before moving upstate where he became police chief of a small town. Matthew Morey, the youngest of the four Morey boys enlisted in the army after graduation from high school but was tragically killed in the line of duty. Dan Morey's only sister Ava, a lawyer, works for the District Attorney's office in New York City.

After graduating from Port Richmond High School in 1975 Morey enrolled at the City University of New York where he received a double degree in political science and philosophy in 1979 and earned a scholarship to attend the New York University School of Law. He received his J.D. in 1982. Against his mother's hopes Morey did not seek a career in law however but instead decided to follow in his father's footsteps and join the New York City Police Department. He spent most of his 30 year career with the Department in Brooklyn (68st Precinct) and served as Commanding Officer of Patrol Borough Brooklyn South for the last 4 years of his career, holding the rank of Assistant Chief.
