Jonathan Hayes was the 48th Vice President of the United States.

Born on July 12, 1947 in Santa Fe, New Mexico. Hayes's father, William Hayes (b. 1905, d. 1999), was involved in the Manhattan project during World War II, and worked at Los Alamos lab until his retirement in 1970. Hayes's mother, Lucille Hayes (b.1914), was a librarian.

Hayes obtained a degree in law from Georgetown University in 1969. While at the University, he interned for New Mexico's Senior Senator, Clinton P. Anderson. He worked as a clerk for the New Mexico Constitutional Convention in 1969, which started many of his political contacts. He briefly worked as a secretary for the Santa Fe County Commission in 1970, before going on to work under Governor King's chief of Staff 1971 - 1975, and was Governor Apodaca's legal counsel 1975 - 1979.

In 1978, Hayes entered politics outright when he was elected as New Mexico's Attorney General. In 1982, he unseated one-term Senator Harrison Schmitt to be elected to the United States Senate. Re-elected in 1988, 1994, 2000 and 2006, Hayes would serve in the Senate until his confirmation as Vice President in 2010.

During his many years in Congress, Hayes befriended a moderate Democrat from Pennsylvania, Jack Magruder. Magruder would become Speaker of the House in 2009, inevitably putting him in the position to succeed Barack Obama later that year. The Vice Presidency had been vacant since July of 2009 when Joe Biden resigned under the shadow of scandal. To fill the void, Magruder chose Hayes to act as the "caretaker" Vice President. Hayes was confirmed unanimously by the Senate to the position on November 26, 2010, and a 402-35 vote in the House. Hayes affirmed in his confirmation hearing that he would not seek or accept his party's nomination for the Presidency in 2012.

In the late 1970s, he invested heavily in real estate development in what would become Albuquerque's booming suburb of Rio Rancho, an investment that continues to comfortably support him.
