Daniel James Morey (born 28 September 1957) is a United States politician currently serving as Congressman for New York's 8th congressional district. He is the Ranking Member on the House Standing Committee on Foreign Relations and Armed Services and in this capacity a member of the 'Gang of Eight.' Previously he served with the New York City Police Department (NYPD) for 30 year, achieving the rank of Assistant Chief.

Biography

Daniel James Morey was born on September 28, 1957 in Brooklyn, NYC. He was born as the first of four children into a family of Scottish-German decent. Both his father James, a police officer with the NYPD, and his mother Maria, a schoolteacher, were first generation Americans. With both his parents working, young Dan Morey spent a lot of time with his grandparents who tought him the German language - which he is fluent in up to this day. He also speaks bits of French and Spanish. Morey has three brothers and one sister. The oldest of his three brothers, James "Sonny" Morey moved to Michigan for College where he went on to become a successful businessman and politician. Richard Morey served 15 years with the NYPD before moving upstate where he became police chief of a small town. Matthew Morey, the youngest of the four Morey boys enlisted in the army after graduation from high school but was tragically killed in the line of duty. Dan Morey's only sister Ava, a lawyer, works for the District Attorney's office in New York City.

Morey's father was shot in the line of duty in 1969 and the family moved to Staten Island to live with family there. After graduating from Port Richmond High School in 1975 Morey enrolled at the City University of New York where he received a double degree in political science and philosophy in 1979 and earned a scholarship to attend the New York University School of Law. He received his J.D. in 1982. Against his mother's hopes Morey did not seek a career in law however but instead decided to follow in his father's footsteps and join the New York City Police Department. He spent most of his 30 year career with the Department in Brooklyn (68st Precinct) and served as Commanding Officer of Patrol Borough Brooklyn South for the last 4 years of his career, holding the rank of Assistant Chief.

Having spent almost his entire life in Brooklyn, Morey decided in 2012 to contest for the seat in New York's 8th congressional district and retired from the NYPD. To his own surprise he came out victorious in the primary and went on to win the general election.

First Term in Congress

Following his election victory in the 2012 general election, Morey was assigned to serve on the House Standing Committee on Foreign Relations and Armed Services. This assignment followed his speech at the 2012 Democratic National Convention in Chicago, where he stressed the need for a new foreign policy approach.

Morey, who had spent five years with the NYPD's Counterterrorism Bureau also stressed homeland security reform and became an active advocat of American soldiers, Veterans and their families in D.C.. The first bill passed by the newly elected 113th Congress, the "Keeping America's Heroes Safe Act" was a bill introduced by Dan Morey - designed to improve body armor for America's soldiers.

Alex Hayes, the Foreign Relation's and Armed Services Committee Ranking Member stood in a special election for the Senate seat vacated by the President upon his election and Morey succeeded as Ranking Member of the committee.

The bills introduced by Congressman Morey included a wide variety of subjects - ranging from protecting America's environment to ensuring victory in the War on Terror. He also sponsored the "Joint Resolution on Authorization of Force in Chad," a bi-partisan resolution to authorize air strikes in Chad.

Personal Life and Family

Morey met his wife Rachel while at Law School and the couple got married in 1983 at St Agnes Roman Catholic Church in Brooklyn. Rachel, a native Canadian, had moved to New York City to attend grad school. Rachel was diagnosed with cancer in 2010 and tragically passed away a year later. Friend's of the family credit Morey's move to seek higher office to the loss of his wife as it had always been her dream for him to represent New York in Congress one day.

They have four children: Matthew Daniel (born 1984), Isobel Marie (born 1986), Kara Michelle (born 1989) and Sophie Payge (born 1994). Matthew studied architecture at the City University of New York and graduated in 2008. He currently works for a small architecture firm, based in New York City. Isobel studied Journalism at New York University, graduating in 2010. She worked for a local tv channel until her father's successfull election to Congress when she joined his staff as Communications Director/Press Secretary. Kara enrolled at the Juilliard School in New York studying the piano. She received her B.A. in Music in 2011 and is currently enrolled in the school's Master of Music program. Sophie, the youngest of the four children, graduated high school in 2012 and spent half a year working with an NGO in Africa.

Morey's an avid sports fan and season ticket holder to the New York Jets for years. He also supports the New York Yankees, the New York Knicks and the New York Rangers. During his younger years Morey was an avid boxer and played football both at high school and in college as quarterback for his alma mater. Up to this day he is an ardent survivalist, regularly taking exotic vacations whenever possible.
