Farzin grew up in a the Iranian city of Tabriz under the rule of the Shah of Iran. Farzin's father, a local trader in the city streets, was killed in 1978 by government forces loyal to the Shah as he demostrated against crackdowns. This loss hurt Farzin very deeply, as he wrote to his mother in 1986 while he was attending his religious studies:
My mother, the well is full of my tears, and do not know if I can bear the loss of Father as his face still stays in my mind.
