Sorry, but I call BS on this particular ilnnatlmest. As a solo female hiker, I have never noticed that kind of it's a man's place out here attitude from hikers. Locals, once or twice. Folks back home, definitely. But not from the guys on trail. If someone was giving you dirty looks, it probably wasn't because of your gender. I'm guessing you brought a set of pre-conceived notions with you on the trip. Let it go! I have never felt the need to prove myself in order to be accepted by other hikers and neither should you.
