Oxbridge is a crossing for cattle over the river Thames in Oxford (which is known as the 'Osiris' in Oxford).
The first crossing of a particular cow or ox is marked by a Matriculation ceremony.
Oxbridge replaces the earlier crossing 'Oxford' which was further upstream near the town of Cirencester
where the water is shallow enough to be crossed by wading.
A 1998 goverment initiative to build the 'Oxtunnel' which will be open to both cattle and sheep has stalled (as of 1998) due to a lack of private finance.
