[edit] Personality

Yorick is the type of person who is always searching for a purpose in life. Before the plague hit, he was feeling utterly useless as an unemployed English major who rarely left his apartment. After the plague, he felt even worse. Why, out of all the billions of men on the planet, had someone as completely inept as him been chosen by fate to live? He suffered from survivor's guilt for a while, and would constantly throw himself into dangerous situations in an unconcious effort to get himself killed. However, a suicide intervention performed by one Agent 711 stopped that and gave him a reason to live.

One of the ways in which Yorick deals with the depressing reality of his situation is by clinging to the past. He wants to hold true to the morals he had before the plague, and to that extent is trying to stay faithful to the woman he considers his fiancee. In one issue, he says that he wouldn't want to have sex with somebody if they wouldn't have been attracted to each other before the plague; it would feel like a lie.

Another way he copes is by making light of things. He has a quirky sense of humor, and often makes references to pop culture. Since he has a penchant for the obscure, a lot of his comments tend to go right over other people's heads; as a result he has lot of inside jokes with himself. He will often cite random trivia ("Did you know Elvis had a twin brother?"), and is prone to making philosophical discussions out of them. Also, he is an amateur magician and an escape artist. (I like to think of this as another facet of his love for all things irrelevent, although it ends up being a very useful skill for him.)

[edit] History

Before the plague hit, Yorick was an unemployed English major cooped up in his tiny Manhattan apartment. Feeling useless, he had volunteered to train a helper monkey, which he named Ampersand. As the plague hit shortly afterwards, finishing Amp's training became irrelevent; and so Yorick kept him as a pet and companion. He was just about to propose to his girlfriend (over the phone, because she was in the Australian outback) when the plague struck and his connection got cut. Despite the fact that he never got an answer, he took to considering her (Beth) his fiancee.

With all the [other] men dead, Yorick decided that he would check on his mother down in Washington, and see how the rest of his family was doing. After he found out that his dad was dead and his sister unaccounted for, he decided he would got to Australia and find his Beth. But the government had other plans for him. They needed him to go to Boston and find one Dr. Allison Mann, the nation's leading geneticist and expert on human cloning, so that she could figure out what exactly was going on. They assigned Agent 355, of the secret group known as the Culper Ring, to be his escort and bodyguard. And so, reluctant but unable to argue, Yorick headed north again.

So they made it to Boston, and Dr. Mann's lab, but before she could conduct tests on either of them Ampersand threw a hissy-fit and jumped out the window. Of course, Yorick, Three-fifty, and Doc all had to go chasing after him... and when they returned they found the lab a fiery inferno, beyond recovery, and their only alternative is to go to the Doc's backup lab in California. And travel had become a lot harder since all the men died.

A lot happened on their journey west. Yorick got knocked out of a railcar, and met and fell in love with a beautiful girl named Sonia. But shortly after his arrival, the Amazons came to town. The Amazons were a group of women, frightened and looking for answers in a strange world, and their leader had convinced them that men were extinct for a reason- because God wanted them dead. Hearing of Yorick's existence, they had been tracking him from Boston; and Yorick's sister, Hero, had in the chaos that followed the plague joined their ranks. She was essentially brainwashed, and when Sonia killed the Amazon's leader with an ax, Hero shot her in the chest. Yorick was devastated, and about to shoot his sister himself... but instead he handed her over to the town. Then the daring trio continued west.

Somewhere along the trip, they met Natalya, a Russian agent, who told them that the cosmonauts (two men, one woman) were still in space and needed to land at the backup site in Kansas. She enlisted their help, and they traveled to the hot suite (sterile environment) in Kansas, which was near the landing site. Yorick got kidnapped by Israelis, but he got out of it so that's all good; and the spaceship landed but only the girl got out before it exploded. But that was okay, too, because she was pregnant with one of the male astronaut's babies (whose was unclear). Natalya stayed to protect the expectant mother, and Yorick, Three-fifty, and the Doc continued their westward journey.

So Three-fifty decided that Yorick has a problem with trying to commit suicide through pointless acts of bravado (which he did) and dropped him off at her friend 711's house while she and the Doc ran some errands. 711 drugged Yorick, tied him up in her basement, and went all dominatrix on his ass. Talk about his past, his issues with sex, and fun torture ensued, until Yorick admitted he wants to die. She proceeded to drown him, but 'Rick's pyschological trauma for the last several hours had pushed him to the edge and he has a vision, one that made him want to live. He fought back, escaped, and ran up the stairs, shouting "I don't want to die!" 711 was like, "Thank God that's over", and they hung out and read books until Three-fifty and the Doc got back.

The three travelers ran into a blockade on I-40, and Dr. Mann went to try to talk reasonably with them and get passage safely through. Three-fifty had to go save her, because people who cut the country in half by blocking major interstates for no real reason are not nice people. And Yorick stayed behind, because he had stopped trying to commit suicide, but he was armed with a gun in case anybody attacked. Doc and Three-fifty took out the blockade from the inside, and Yorick accidently killed a chick who pulled a gun on him, a source of secret angst for issues to come. Then they hit the road again.

Geez, is this a long bio or what?

They got to Dr. Mann's backup lab (finally!), and the good Doc figured out that the reason Yorick survived the plague was because Ampersand had a special immunity to whatever killed all the men and the monkey flung his antibodies at Yorick's face in the form of poo. Then a ninja came and kidnapped little Amp. (No, seriously.)
