Powers and Abilities

Hughes is a military officer. Even though he's not usually seen on the front lines, he keeps himself in top physical condition in case he does get into a fight. Other than physical capabilities, he is proficient in throwing knives, which he keeps in loops of his belt.

History

A member of the Amestris Military, Maes joined the military and became friends with a state Alchemist by the name of Roy Mustang. While Mustang took a more proactive approach to the military, Hughes chose more of a desk job where he would not be on the front lines. Early in their careers, Mustang was involved with the Ishballan War and upon his return home, Hughes was the friend to coerce Roy to become Furher in order to make up for his transgressions in the War.

Several years after the Ishballan incident, Hughes came across two boys during a mission by train, Edward Elric and Alphonse Elric. The brothers assisted the Military in apprehending a kidnapper. Maes befriended the boys as Ed became a State Alchemist under Mustang's jurisdiction and assisted Edward in his research on the Philosopher's Stone. In the process of assisting the Elric's in their quest, Maes discovered corruption in the Military ranks all the way up to the current Furher, King Bradley. In his attempts to contact Roy Mustang to forewarn him of the Furher's true identity, he was murdered by a homunculis, leaving his wife and daughter behind.
