Hanyuu is a very timid creature, it does not take a lot to upset her. She prefers to mind her own business and often is too shy to talk to people. She is very easily scared away and mutters a little cry when she is upset, sad, or happy. She is very unsure of herself and has rather low self esteem, she has low confidence and does not believe in herself at all, watching your best friend die over and over for about 500+ years will do that to you. She hides as often as she can and due to living for over 500+ years with only Rika to talk to, she is a social retard, and because of this she stutters often when she talks to someone new because she is rather terrified of the person in front of her. It doesn't matter who it is or what they look like, 99.99% of the time she will be afraid of you...she is that timid.
[edit] Powers and Abilities
CANON: She has the ability to control time, IE she can freeze it and most importantly, rewind time itself. When she is in her spirit form she is invisible, can fly, and go through walls. It also seems that she can go into a flesh form when she chooses...but canon isn't very clear on this. O__o Higurashi has a few plot holes...she has a very close bond with Rika, almost the way twins have, their senses are connected. I don't know if this counts as a power, but I thought I should mention it.
AU: Can not switch at all to her ghost form and can only freeze time for six-ten seconds, can not rewind time at all. She can also feel it when Rika eats spicy foods, but it's not as powerful as before.

It isn't really explained WHAT Hanyuu is, but it's safe to say that she is a Deity of some kind that has lived in the village of Hinamizawa since the beginning, floating around and doing her own thing until a little girl moved into the village and could finally see her. Though it took a little bit for Hanyuu to warm up to her, they became very good friends. Hanyuu talked to Rika often and spent as much time with her as she could, the little girl was a priestess at the local temple even though tragically struck her one night when her whole family was killed do to the fact of having a different opinion then everyone else (Her family was for a dam project, the village didn't take too kindly too it and killed them). Hanyuu still stuck by her through the hard times, the village didn't seem to pay too much attention to Rika, she lived on her own most of the time and came out to do religious things and appear at festivals.
Sadly, the happy times did not last as the village was caught up in a conspiracy, people were getting sick and turning mad for no reason what so ever. Despite many appeals and urges from the counsel to the government to find a more human way to deal with the village, a death of a little girl was the last straw.
Sadly, this little girl happened to be Rika, she was viciously torn apart and left on the alter of her temple for all to see. The government took extreme action, killing the whole village with gas and blaming it on a gas leak in the swamp. Horrified at what just happened, Hanyuu re-wound time in hopes of making sure it didn't happen again. But sadly...it did happen again, and time after time after time Rika just kept dieing. It has been said that she had tried at least 500+ times. Hanyuu was starting to loose hope, because no matter how hard she tried, she was always too scared to open her eyes and see Rika's death and for some strange reason, Rika could not remember her last thoughts in death. Finally when all hope seemed to be lost, things finally began to turn around, things started to become different then what they were used too.
People were starting to remember certain things that had happened before, events were changing, and most importantly...Rika and her group of friends began to unite. In the end they found out who was causing everything, a woman by the name of Takano that they had trusted was the reason for Rika's death, and the reason why she couldn't remember anything was because Rika was drugged before giving killed. In order to remember her face, Rika demanded that she wasn't given the drugs, and enduring the pain she burned Takano's face into her mind, positive that next time it would be different. Hanyuu too was going to try a different thing, she was going to take on flesh form, and travel as closely with Rika as possible. This is where I am taking her.
Even though she doesn't really "show up" until the second season she is very much around. Hanyuu is invisible, and those infected with the Hinamizawa syndrome (a government experiment gone wrong) can hear her footsteps echo throughout the walls, this has a rather horrible effect on most because it drives the person absolutely insane. Hanyuu is often called Oyashiro-sama, which is the god in the local temple. Her image has been horrible misunderstood as Oyashiro-sama is often depicted as a bloodthirsty and merciless monster that loves hate, torture, and human sacrifices. Hanyuu hates this image very much, and try as hard as she can...she can never manage to clean it up at all.
