Personality

Roy is arrogant and egotistical with a perchance for slacking off on paperwork. However he has the fierce loyalty of his staff that wouldn’t be there if not for his real personality. To the outside world, Roy can seem just like a military man only out for promotions. But in truth, he’s out to better the country. By climbing the military ladder, he seeks to reshape Ametris so that no more wars will be fought.

He’s highly intelligent and uses everything he can to the advantage of his goals or those he seeks to protect. He keeps one step ahead of his enemies and prefers to feel in control of a situation. Roy isn’t without his short comings. Despite his lofty goals of becoming the Furher, and protecting the entire country when his friends are in danger he is willing to sacrifice those goals to protect them.

Powers and Abilities

Roy is a powerful alchemist in his own right who uses his gloves made of ignition cloth. He has an array stitched on the back of them and they spark when snapped. His alchemy controls the oxygen and hydrogen in the air. It ignites the hydrogen while adjusting the level of oxygen as fuel for the fire. He uses the air currents to create pathways to his targets. Without the air currents he lacks accuracy, and while it is assumed he is useless in rain? This is not true. Only if he has no way to ignite the water that he can convert into hydrogen. Another drawback of his alchemy is without oxygen he can’t make very large or controlled explosions.

History

Not much is known about Roy Mustang’s past. We do know that he befriended Hughes at some point and became a state alchemist. How long it took before he was sent to Ishbal to help quell the rebellion is unseen. Sent in as a human weapon, he murdered and killed upon orders. Among the dead were Winry’s parents, and possibly the last straw for Roy. He was going to take his own life, but was stopped by Dr. Marco. Instead he allowed the alchemist to escape and was labeled a war hero when the war was over.

Its implied he broke down and was seriously considering an attempt at human transmutation. Huges stopped him and encouraged him to use his life to prevent wars. Roy took this to heart and started down his current path of climbing the military ladder. We don’t see him again until he comes to Resembool seeking the Elric’s father. He finds the Elric brothers in time to witness the glow of their attempt of human transmutation. He confronts them about it at the Rockbells and speaks to them about becoming state alchemists.

Next time we see him, he’s meeting Edward at the train station a year or so later. He assigns Ed to study under Tucker for the state exam. What his motivations were is unclear but he observes him while Ed takes the test. He’s seen off and on as he transfers from Central to Eastern city and then back to Central. When Hughes is murdered, he takes it upon himself to continue Hughes’ investigation.

At the same time he keeps a sharp eye on Hughes replacement and even interrupts a meeting to accompany those going to Liore. At the established base, he orders Edward to stay close and follow his orders directly. He is less than pleased when Edward goes to Colonel Archer. After most of the soldiers are used to make the philosopher’s stone, he is ordered to pursue the Elrics.

He corners him in Resembool and learns the truth of what the Elrics have been doing. He returns to Central and tests the Führer to determine his true allegiance. The Furher promotes Roy one rank and sends him off to the northern border. Instead of going, Roy stays behind while Havoc pretends to be Roy. He encounters Edward on his way to end the trouble. They speak one last time before he heads off to assassinate the Furher. He succeeds in his goal, but is shot by Archer.

Afterward he resigns his position as an alchemist and rank to be an ordinary enlisted man, assigned to a remote region. Apparently by this point he and Winry are on speaking terms. When Central is attacked he arrives and takes command. Armstrong and Roy created a hot air balloon, which is how he’s reunited with the Elric brothers. He helps them gain access into the main airship and when Edward intends to leave, it’s implied he let Al go. He destroyed the Gate on the Ametris side.
