Personality

Even though he is so young and inexperienced, Ritsuka is a very intelligent character, approaching things with a starling maturity. Because of what happened to him during his life, he is forced to encourage a lack of innocence in himself, however, he still allows a view through his stubborn exterior to the fact that he is still strongly naïve towards life in general, particularly in the more sexual and romantic aspects of life. Though, he still is known to have firm opinions and unrelenting ideas that surround such ideals. His opinions tend to clash dramatically with the adult/authority figures in his life and though he is a pacifist, strongly opposing violence to be the means of any circumstance, he has no issues in standing up for himself and what he believes. Notably because of his background, love has always been and always will be an uncomfortable subject when it comes to Ritsuka’s character. He strays away from compliments and hates to hear words of praise. Hard headed and determined, beneath his persona lurks one that was once content and happy with life, though now he expresses himself through labeling himself as a social outcast and refusing to open up to those around him, wanting to exist; on his own. Independent, purely.

Powers and Abilities

In the Loveless universe, everyone is born with cat ears and a cat tail, which are shed when the character baring them have had some sort of sexual intercourse, allowing for the removal of their ears and tail much like the removal of ones virginity. Ritsuka, being only the age of twelve, still has yet to loose such extremities of his being. He is protective of them, as having such parts of him touched, is considered wrong unless the one doing so is a lover.

The fighting expressed in the series is a unique form of battle and ability that Ritsuka holds namely when his ‘fighter’ is around him. Fighting can only occur between couples where there is one sacrifice who is the one to receive all the damage inflicted, and the fighter who is the one attempts to attack the rival. Considered a spell battle, attack and defense can only be used by announcing words that relate to the fighter and sacrifice. It is because of this, both are united by their names which are given to them by other means than their own, some say before birth. Those who go against their name are ridiculed by the other teams and experience a loss in battle strength. Pairings are decided for the two, and decided before either have the ability to make a different choice, therefore the bond that is created is something forced and received.

History

The protagonist of the manga/anime Loveless, Ritsuka was born on the twenty-first of December into a shell of a family. Never knowing his father, Ritsuka grew up in Japan with his mother and elder brother, Seimei. Strongly dependent on his brother, Ritsuka turned to Seimei for protection and guidance in life. While their mother was not the most ideal of parents, frequently enraged and abusive to her children, he had always been there to help him through rough times, surviving each day and through every situation, their brotherly bond proved deeper and survived along, in stride. Yet, there was still so much in the world that Ritsuka did not understand, and it was his lack of understanding, that would soon become overwhelming.

His "true name" revolving around the singular term; Loveless, Ritsuka knew nothing of what is to come and how the game of life is was to be played out through his innocence and dependency within the reach of his brother. Though only so long can one hold onto those they care for dearly and one winter day, Ritsuka would know a pain like no other and his world would be brought down upon him.

Tragedy struck at the age of ten, when not only did he loose what he adored most in his existence, but all he had in the world. He was to learn that his brother had been brutally murdered and in death, there was nothing he could do about it. While they said that time could heal all wounds, nothing nor anyone could find a cure for a broken soul.

Once a popular, average grade student, Ritsuka made an abrupt change. Suffering a loss of all his memories, his personality changed, not affecting his grades but his attitude towards people as he became cold and standoffish towards those around him, friends he had grown up with, they all did not matter to him any more and he made it known that he wanted nothing to do with them. Apathetic and uncaring, refusing friendship and rejecting love.

Forced into therapy, for the next two years and even more than that, counselors put their best efforts into helping the boy as he kept the reason why, a secret. All they were able to find out was that he was scared of loosing even more memories than he had, developing an obsession with taking pictures to make sure he would never forget. Without his brother everything seemed to stop and his mother, put all the guilt of the disappearance of the “old Ritsuka” as well as the death of her first son on him, becoming more violent and abusive.

Kicked out of his original school at the age of twelve for reasons that seem to travel behind hushed lips, his mother, desperate to send her son away, to keep him busy, enlisted him into a new school and though it was further away and more within the public spectrum, they hesitantly accepted him, trying to see past his history. Ritsuka, uncaring for the situation, submitted to the will of his mother in fear of her becoming infuriated once again, though in which always happened, she would find reason to hate him, find reason to misjudge him and shun him, allowing more bandages to grace the surface of his skin.

Yet it is on the first day of his new schooling that Ritsuka’s life took yet another unexpected turn.

Leaving school grounds, the twelve year Ritsuka Aoyagi came across a rather mysterious ninetheen-year old by the name Soubi Agatsuma. Though this was not a simple introduction as Soubi, with no hesitation, confuses the young student at his sudden intimacy and claim to the fact that he was once Seimei’s fighter, calling him by the name, ‘Beloved’. The confusion of the moment sent Ritsuka into a rather displeasing state of mind, only to discovery shortly that Seimei’s impromptu will dictates that Soubi shall become Ritsuka’s upon the event of his death. His connection with so strong with his brother, deeply admiring and idolizing him, it sent him into shock, discovering so many things kept secret from him. This only came to further poison his trust in others and particularly, it was aimed at Soubi.

Yet, not only does he find himself forced to spend time with the strange man, he finds himself willed into the submission of fate by the desire to find out what happened to his brother and linked by soul to the man who claims nothing but love.

Ignoring him in the long run, Ritsuka forces himself to become interested when Soubi informs him on the organization know as the Seven Moons and their relation to his brothers death. Trying to distance himself as much as possible, Ritsuka feels nothing more than the need to investigate the claim in which he finds out shortly he would need the strange mans help more than he expected. Soubi announcing his ownship upon him as his ‘fighter’, Ritsuka is introduced to a strange form of magic where he is linked to the other as a ‘sacrifice’, a type of battle system.

It is recommended that not only should he use the system to challenge the organization but to bring them defeat so that not only may Ritsuka find peace in knowing his brothers killers, but also gain a sense of revenge. Little did he know the intimate bond he started to develop through himself and the figure that would just not leave him alone.

Frustrated in Soubi’s constant refusal to disclose any information about himself and Seimei, Ritsuka finds himself being told that he is loved, frequently. Not believing him in the slightest, he becomes cynical in his actions and reactions towards the proclamations he believes nonexistent.

Inner conflict on the rise whether he should believe what Soubi said creates tension and bitterness in their relationship, yet, as the days grew on, the better of Ritsuka’s curiosity got to him and before acceptance and admittance towards his will to work along side him is mentioned, Ritsuka soon finds himself pulled from the gaze of another, into a world where nothing exists and all he holds is a means of creating memory.
