The British Empire's navies are the most powerful in the world. All told, the Admiralty controls approximately 500 major warships (Aircraft carriers, battleships, cruisers, destroyers, frigates, and submarines). The command structure of the British Empire's navies is complex. The Royal Navy is commanded by the Admiralty, but some of its units permanently deployed in the colonies come under the command of the Colonial Office. Dominion Navies all come under their own governments. The Royal Indian Navy is under the control of the India Office, however global military command is usually exercised by the Admiralty, and colonial governments will usually allow themselves to be advised by the Admiralty. In time of war, the naval forces of the entire Empire will fall under the command of the Admiralty.

Exchange deployments and training are commonplace. Indian and Dominion officers frequently train at the Britannia Royal Naval College.

The British Empire's warships are usually built to standard designs in shipyards across the Empire. For example, the Type 42 Destroyer is built at four British shipyards, Mazagon Dock Limited in India, Cockatoo Island in Australia, and Sandock Austral in South Africa. This standardisation is rarely deviated from, which means that naval bases across the Empire can support all of the Empire's warships.

The Royal Navy's forces are divided into the Home Fleet, and the Colonial Squadrons.
