Reference to an American slave spiritual that is now often sung as a gospel song[1]. In its original, form purportedly first popularized by Harriet Tubman[2], it was meant to serve as a warning/reminder to those on the Underground Railroad[3] that when escaping it is best to walk through the streams and rivers to throw pursuing dogs off the scent[4].
