"John" is John Darnielle of The Mountain Goats. Their "last CD" was The Sunset Tree (released in 2005) and "song number three" refers to the third track "This Year". In 2003, John Darnielle opened for Lifter Puller. Tad Kubler joined him on stage to play "See American Right." This show can be downloaded at the Mountain Goats website.
