Maria is a maid for works for father and the family. She went thorugh a lot of hardship when she was younger and father hired her to help her. She is a reoccuring character throughout the whole novel. Most of her life and her life-story before the novel begins is spoken about in chapter six, The Overpaid Maid where it discusses how Maria came to work for father and the family.
