Summary
After Bruno disappears, Mother delays returning to Berlin. After several months, she suddenly returns there, having thought that Bruno may have made his way home. Father stays at Auschwitz for a year longer, before realising what has happened to Bruno. It is implied that he is driven insane by the realisation.
