The Last Chapter
Summary
After Bruno disappears, Mother delays returning to Berlin. After several months, she suddenly returns there, having thought that Bruno may have made his way home. Father stays at Auschwitz for a year longer, before realising what has happened to Bruno. It is implied that he is driven insane by the realisation. Some time after that, Russian soldiers arrive at Ausch—er, "Out-With". Father goes with them without struggle because 'he didn't really care what they did to him any more.'
