Historical Notes on Grecein

A small mining and heavy-industrial planet located in the Central Empire region at a junction of the major trade lanes between the Ska'ari and Keldon clusters. The ever clouded skies help to reduce the intensity of the binary star system that Grecein orbits, but also provide some rather unusual coloration to the planetary surface depending on which pollutants are present in the upper atmosphere at the time. The unique sunsets can be viewed from the observation decks of some of the bio-domes, albeit through 15 feet of heavily leaded glass and protective shields. The planetary surface is devoid of any wildlife or vegetation, while heavy machinery and large industrial facilities litter the landscape that shows the marring of centuries of unabated corporate mining. Many a worker, that was willing to brave the harsh environment and gruelling work, has become rich in the mining, smelting, and radiation collection/packaging industries on Grecein, but a large number have also met with an early death. The heavy metals produced on Grecein account for most of the freighter production in the Imperial Shipyards due to their quality, seemingly inexhaustible supply, and unbeatable prices. As a member of the Central Empire, the much coveted constrictor is available for purchase at the local shipyard (painted green to instil envy in those that don't yet have one), but the PASC is not since there is little need of such an advanced fighter in the Central Empire.

Grecein experienced its heyday during the recent Federation-Empire war and was as famous for the behaviour of its miners as it was for the production of heavy metals. However, with the exodus of most of the miners after the war, Grecein has begun to reform its image. Many of the brothel and gambling domes have been transformed into vibrant indoor rainforests, jungles, and other natural recreation facilities complete with animal life, insects, and in one case a rather spectacular rainstorm emulator as well. Although the mining, smelting, and radiation industries are still the largest employers on the planet, new industries are beginning to surface. The fledgling tourism industry boasts of the Grand Mines of Grecein which are some of the most visited underground attractions in the whole universe. Although most of the planet's mines are still in active use, many are available for exploration as well as guided tours. In some instances, they are even connected to natural caverns and lava tubes while legends of daring miners and cave monsters abound.
