Science @ WDB: DOWN TO THE BONE
Bone cartilege

...an article by Iain Barnwell As we grow older, our bones begin to harden.
This is known as ossification. A soft material called
hyaline cartilage forms the initial bone structure.
Then half way down the shaft (diaphysis) of long bone
cartilage, a calcified (formed by calcium) matrix
begins to appear surrounded by the uncalcified matrix.
This calcified matrix becomes the primary ossification centre.
Once ossified, the arteries and veins form inside a space
called the medullary cavity. These supply the bone with its
required nutrients and transport white blood cells that
originate in the bone marrow. At the epiphyses (the ends),
secondary ossification centres form in the uncalcified matrices.
The hyaline cartilage between the diaphysis and the epiphyses
becomes the epiphyseal plates at each end which allow for
bone extension throughout childhood and up to adulthood.
At the same time, the articular cartilage forms and acts as
a buffer for jointed bone movement.

We are the only forum dedicated to bringing you the science behind the books as well the primary focus of the forum - the books by Kathy Reichs. We are the only forum that has a fresh design with a clinical appeal. We are most probably the only forum that has one board dedicated to each book.

We have had the pleasure of creating possibly the very first site ring for the purpose of bringing all forensic related sites together. The layout is based on a real building. Hence the rooms and names of boards. Please don't be shy about suggesting improvements. There really is no excuse if you don't communicate with us.

I'd like to give big thank you
for my wonderful members
who have participated in the
forum over the year. Thank
you also to those who have
made valuable contributions
and to those who have
joined the site ring.
I welcome more to join.
It is after all relatively simple
to join and does not require a
membership of any site ring
service. I thank Bravenet for
my site services and to
Proboards for hosting the
forum. Not to mention of
course Saybox for providing
the very useful shout box at
the bottom.
