Today we: designed our shaft using estimated maximum force and torque in the shaft, using the Weibull equation to find bearing life, and finding stresses and moments in the shaft. talked about the drive train some. one likely avenue: most likely going to use no transmission, direct driving the motor to the spindle using a plastic coupling that will fail at a specified load (less than the stall torque of the motor). This would imply supplying many couplings with the machine so that it could be easily replaced. (and desiging the machine to easily replace the coupling). A PWM motor driver circuit will likely be implemented instead of a transmission. this system should be spec'd. An optical tachometer may be included with the lathe, so that (human) feedback can be used to set the motor speed. There is a small chance an actual feedback system will be implemented.
