The Official is the unofficial title of the head of The Agency. Usually an expert bureaucrat who needs not trade on the secret resources of the Agency, but on their own ability to navigate the twisty backwater of the U.S. executive services, The Official really reports directly to the President, and no one else (and sometimes, not even him).
