Biography

Marcus Hurlbut came to the SMES following the long tenure of Mark Campaign as the new headmaster of SMES. Campaign was replaced primarily because he would not focus enough on the aggressive fundraising neccessary to raise the large capital for the school board's aggressive expansion policy.

Hurbut was brought in to appeal to the parent's of SMES to give large multi-million dollar donations. He had a successful job before being brought into SMES, raising nearly $40 million for the school he was with before.

Introduction to SMES

Hurbut came to SMES in the fall semester of '04, appealing to students with his positive attitude and cowboy nature. It has often been mused that Hurbut would look far more fitting if he were firing two pistols in the air, wearing a cow boy hat and saying "yeeee haw"

Hurlbut was able to raise more money by changing school policy to reflect the wishes of some very influential parents. He got a massive $10 million dollar within months of his appointment. Part of the problem was he was willing to change school policty to please a few parents, often throwing out traditions and changing the dress code on a whim.

Impact to SMES

Hurlbut has been wildly succesful in raising money and getting the 'gymansium of dreams' built in a mere two years after joining the school.

Among his failures was his endorsement of failed upper school principal Dr. Rothman and the largely opposed dress code revisions in '05. He has often worked through the upper school presidents, who act under his policy changes and have to face the student complaints.
