Science Concept: Different animal coverings insulate in cold temperatures.
Using "Blubber Gloves" filled with Crisco, feathers, fur, feathers and Crisco, fur and Crisco, and air students explore what it might be like for polar bears and penguins in the polar climate. Students place their hands in "gloves" made with different coverings to determine which is a better insulator. They feel which covering keeps their hands the warmest when submerged in ice water for one minute.
Students compare a blubber covering to a feather covering.
After one minute which hand is coldest?
Blubber and fur keep hands very warm.
Students describe how animal coverings help them survive in the Arctic climate.
