This is a guide for computer buyers, builders and modders who want to find the optimal hardware for use with Cakewalk's SONAR.

SATA Hard Drives

SONAR users storing their audio data on SATA hard drives have reported having numerous problems. It's recommended to store your SONAR audio on an IDE or external hard drive, by simply putting your audio folder there and pointing Sonar to it in the "Project Folders" box in Options | Global | Folders.

Note that having Windows, or even the Sonar program itself, on a SATA drive does not seem to cause these problems.

ProTools Hardware

SONAR has serious problems using ProTools hardware. See this forum thread for more details.

The 64-Bit Question

Cakewalk's official take on using Sonar on 64-bit computers can be read here.

Note that this is not the same as using SONAR's 64-Bit Precision option.
