Notes

One of the best Strength jobs with respectable Defense and Max HP to boot. The Soldier has some pretty darn nasty close quarters moves. His Rend line lets him tear apart the defense or offense of his enemies and anything softer can be shreaded with normal attacks or situational abilities. The Soldier is solidly lacking in range however; this can be remidied by either a support job or exchanging the trusty sword for a ranged weapon with the appropriate support skill.

Soldier as a Main Job

Main job Soldiers are some of the most solid melee jobs out there. Sub Paladin for added Defense and some abilities to keep yourself alive, Rogue for a more situational Soldier that can nigh one-shot enemies in the right situations, or something with ranged abilities like Mercenary or even Wizard to take care of enemies that stay out of range. Getting the Equip Crossbow support ability allows you to perform many powerful Soldier attacks from a distance, though that puts the job's defensive abilities somewhat to waste.

Soldier as a Sub Job

Soldier as a sub can bring additional melee ability to a weaker character. Though it won't offer the defense of a Paladin, the offensive might of Soldier can make a fragile but powerful job more powerful and slightly less fragile. Sword Mage / Warrior is the most flexible melee combatant concievable and Paladin / Warrior the hardest to take down. Basically any job that benefits from high Strength, even including Rogue, Archer, or Hunter, should look at what Soldier has to offer.
