Appearance
Genevieve very dark brown almost-black hair (which is naturally wavy and often styled curly) and eyes that are just as dark. She has a slender frame, a square jaw, and a deep collarbone. Despite being skinny as hell, Genevieve has a little lean muscle on her arms and calves. Her hair is shoulder-length, but usually looks a little shorter depending on the way she chooses to tie it back or how much she curls it. She has a moderate southern British accent.
Genevieve always tries to look tailored. She wears nice clothes to class and irons her shirts daily. However, she often looks a little rumpled, perhaps out of place, in "teacher" style, certainly not sloppy by any means, but perhaps a little misplaced and dorky. She wears small, oval-shaped spectacles for reading.
Both of her ears are pierced three times, but she only wears one pair of earrings in class.
She has "smoker's fingers" on her right hand.
Genevieve's PB is Helena Bonham Carter.
Personality
She has mellowed out considerably from the days of her youth. This does not mean, however, that Genevieve has abandoned her causes. She's still all about equality and feminism and environmentalism. She's a vegetarian, but she still smokes—quite a lot, in fact (but only cigarettes, now, of course). She was once very cool, and tries to maintain this attitude. She makes witty comments and always has amusing anecdotes for her class.
Genevieve isn't quite as cool as she used to be, though. Though there are brief, shining moments of the cool that once was, Genevieve is primarily a mother. She is clumsy, especially around technology and her bifocals, and invariably the laptop or the glasses case or the water bottle ends up on the floor during a lesson. Student rumor is that conscious-altering drugs and alcohol are responsible for her bad reflexes. Genevieve appreciates these rumors and does nothing to disprove them, but truth is she's just that clumsy. She was always that clumsy and will always be that clumsy. Her wit often gives way to sarcasm and cynicism; she knows that many students do not take her seriously anyway. After so many years of teaching with all of her heart, Genevieve is experiencing just a little bit of exhaustion.
Obviously, her class is more grammar-oriented. It focuses mainly on style, mechanics, and applied usage. Voice is also a HUGE factor in her class. She devotes a small portion of her grade to voice and originality. A student with decent mechanics and a strong literary voice may grade the same or slightly higher than a student with perfect mechanics with a weak, boring voice. She is fond of encouraging her students to write on issues that are important to them – persuasive research papers, conflict compare and contrast, etc. She also tries to throw in a healthy smattering of device-exploiting class activities when she can, and she tries to make them interesting and as non-campy as possible.
She tries to teach her students to use English as a second skin, and to understand its many intricacies and nuances and how to use it as a powerful tool, in the hopes that someday ONE OF THEM will walk out with a heartfelt benefit.
She's also the type to take noticeable spelling errors in other people's comments and correct them as smarmily as possible.
History
Hippies never really go away, they just disappear for a while.
She was born in Bath, and her family relocated to the general Brighton area when she was 11, just in time for her to enter secondary school. This is where she trudged through a tumultuous and rather lonely adolescence.
She had her first child considerably early. He was born out of a loveless relationship, and his birth was somewhat of a wakeup call for Genevieve. Leaving her son with very supportive grandparents, she fought her way into university—enrolling at least a year behind her peers. While studying English and education, Genevieve convinced herself that one day, she was going to change the world. She became active in all sorts of political activism groups and Greenpeace.
Of course, chaining herself to trees and throwing blood on passing rich people didn’t ever really save the world, and it caused more harm than good.
When she was 22, Genevieve was arrested and stuffed in a jail cell overnight. In a classic tale of true love, she fell for the arresting officer, and they were married two years later. They both agreed that, were they to have children, adoption was the way to go. Their first daughter was adopted at the age of three, and they adopted their son at the age of six months about a year later. She also began to care for her biological son once more, all the while pursuing her education. Because of her absence in the first several years of his life, her son always felt a little separated from his mother, and stayed closer to his grandparents throughout adolescence and his own education at Second Heaven. Genevieve has always felt guilty for letting her first child down.
Genevieve’s husband, while he understood her passion, turned out to be much quieter than she, and the wild woman eventually mellowed and fell into a sleepy, marital bliss lull.
She could still change the world, though. Genevieve took all of the passion she had and focused it into teaching. She eventually moved to That Country with her family to take up the English position at Second Heaven High.
Now, it’s not so much changing the world as it is going through the motions.
