Gary in Love is the sister episode to One Coarse Meal, and in comparison to that trash this episode is good, but when compared other episodes you can see the issues.
Why It's ScumBob
- It's a generic "pet finds someone that they love and pursues the chance to be in their company" kind of story. The episode even has a Love Rival.
- SpongeBob acts out of character again. He gets worried about Gary, which makes sense, but he keeps assuming the worst and it gets really annoying fast.
- The other snails are unlikable, such as the three bully snails and even the love interest, Mary, as she is a cheater that only paid attention to Gary because her lover wasn't around. Pretty much only Gary is likable, as even the fish aren't nice to him.
- The episode isn't funny, as per tradition with Season 7.
- The three bully snails have a sudden change of heart at the end and they take Gary to a seaweed noodle stew place. They tried to sabotage and berate Gary the whole episode yet they sympathize with him after seeing him heartbroken. This feels out of nowhere and it just leads to SpongeBob stating a similar line to what he said when Bubble Buddy left at the end of the episode Bubble Buddy.
- The animation is okay, but isn't as fluid as Band Geeks or even some scum episodes.
