It is the time of year when scientists become sleuths, reports CBS News Correspondent Dr. Emily Senay, tracking the ever-changing influenza. The hope is to develop a vaccine that can protect people from the flu pick up.The goal of a new program at Kaiser Permanente in North Hollywood would be to help track the flu virus in socal.Specimens from Kaiser patients are tested to find out which type of flu virus they contain. It's serious business, for the reason that flu kills about 20,000 people every year in the U.S. The knowledge gathered at Kaiser will be passed along to federal organizations to assist decide what strains have been around in next season's flu shot. Kaiser is employing actual specimens, in-patient data from individuals Kaiser hospitals and information from pharmacies. "The virus changes constantly," says Dr. Ann Vannier, an analysis scientist at Kaiser Permanente. "You can see certain strains prevailing, but it's constantly changing, every day, every hour."Those changes make developing next fall's vaccine difficult. Each and every year, three strains are selected to stay in the flu shot. So far, this year's vaccine appears to be a good match. Greater than 90 percent of strains identified by the Centers for Disease Control have been type A Sydney-like viruses, 1 of 3 covered by the flu shot.Kaiser's collaboration belongs to California's effort to track the flu virus each year. And it is a small part of a massive national and international public health effort conducted with the World Health Organization, the federal Centers for Disease Control, and state and county health departments, one that goes on year after year. The vaccine manufacturers aren't waiting. Already, trucks stuffed with chicken eggs are rolling in to the leading vaccine producer in Swiftwater, Pa. They must get started. It takes six months to make and test the vaccine, and production time is tight. The last decision on what strains to incorporate in next year's shot is created by the FDA at the end of March.What are the results if they guess wrong?"You have big trouble," says Dr. Senay. "A few years ago, there was a wrong guess. It had not been covered (by the vaccine). That was Sydney, which came back last year."
