- Books
- I Am Legend, by Richard Matheson.
- I Have No Mouth, And I Must Scream, by Harlan Ellison.
- Comics
- The Walking Dead, by Robert Kirkman. While technically a zombie survival story rather than one of a nuclear holocaust, the Walking Dead is wonderfully atmospheric, dreadfully frightening, and a suprisingly well-done look into the lives of over a dozen survivors. Recommended for characterization work and the proper use of consequences within the storyline.
- Film
- A Boy And His Dog. While twisted toward a more bizarre, psycho-sexual aspect than this game will ever likely cover, this is a
cult classic of nuclear survival, and has been cited as inspiration for countless works in the field.
- The Last Man On Earth. The first adaptation of I Am Legend to the silver screen, this movie certainly takes it's liberties, but in general conveys much of the same tone as the novel does. Also stars a young Vincent Price.
- The Omega Man. The second film adaptation of I Am Legend. A further departure than it's predecessor, but still well done for it's time. Arguably a cult classic.
- Games
- Fallout: A Post-Nuclear Role Playing Game.
- Tribe8: The Past Is Dead The Future Begins Now
- Television
- Hokuto No Ken. Also known as Fist of the North Star.
- Sunabozu. Also known as Desert Punk.
