In the DC Universe, it is generally noted that many characters prior to the Crisis on Infinite Earths (Pre-Crisis) had crazy and open-ended abilities, especially Superman. Post-Crisis, on the other hand, made sure all characters had clearly-defined powers and limitations to these powers.
