Chekhov Play
From Rom Com
What play should they be seeing? I was thinking either a piece of modern drama based on "The Kiss", for obvious irony, or "Uncle Vanya", because I LOVE "Uncle Vanya".
EXT. Street outside theatre. Day.
Tracking shot. Camera follows Nick, Alex, Alex's sidekick, and the GIRL. CUT TO
INT. Theatre lobby. Day.
Medium shot. The lobby is crowded and the four of them are close together. They're talking, but I'm not sure of what yet. (Go ahead and add whatever you want.) CUT TO
INT. Stage.
YELIENA: Ivan Petrovich, you are drunk!
VOINITSKY: Maybe, maybe...
YELIENA: Where's the doctor?
VOINITSKY: He's in there...he's staying the night with me. It may be, it may be...anything may be!
YELIENA: So you have been drinking again today! What ever for?
VOINITSKY: At least it gives the illusion of life. ...Don't prevent me, Helene. ...
YELIENA: You never used to drink and you never used to talk so much...Do go to bed! You bore me!
VOINITSKY [impulsively kissing her hand]: Dearest. ..You wonderful woman!
YELIENA: Leave me alone. This is really hateful! [Goes out].
Far shot. The audience with blank looks on their faces. Nick, Alex's sidekick, and the girl are plainly visible. Alex's seat is empty. Over this is heard:
VOITNITSKY: She's gone. Ten years ago I used to meet her at my sister's house. She was seventeen then and I was thirty-seven. Why did't I fall in love with her then, and ask her to marry me? It could have been done so easily! She would have been my wife now....Yes...and we two might have been awakened by this storm...

INT. Backstage.
Over-the-shoulder shot of Alex kissing a young woman in the garb of an actress. CUT TO
INT. Stage.
Onstage:
SONIA: I've loved him now for six years, I love him more than I did my mother; every moment I seem to hear him, to feel his hand in mine, and I look at the door waiting, expecting him to come in at any moment. And you can see how I keep coming to you just to talk about him. Now he comes here every day, but he doesn't look at me--doesn't see me...it's such a torment! I have no hope at all, none, none! [In despair.] O Lord, give me strength...
