The Imperial Iranian Army is structured into three branches consisting of the:
Ground Force (285,000)
Air Force (100,000)
Navy (40,000)
In addition, there are 300,000 personnel in the reserve forces. This gives the military a total of 725,000 personnel (825,000 if the Imperial Iranian Gendarmerie is included).
The shah is constitutionally designated supreme commander of the armed forces, and important decisions regarding Iran's defense needs are made by him.
