A Boy and His Dog Are Seldom Parted.

There comes a point in one's life that giving pet names to things starts to fade and the real world reality occupies every thought. However, for our hero, that time was not the present. Bagjani still named many things in his life including objects that might never be called animate, for instance, a rope. Bagajani had a special rope, a rope he named dog.

How might a rope be special? In what way had this slender length of hemp and cotton etched itself so thoroughly into his consciousness? Perhaps it was its flexibility, its usefullness in so many situations. Or perhaps it was its history. The history of Dog was quite interesting. Perhaps it would be best to recount the history now, lest the feeble minded reader get confused. Dog once belonged to Vardhamana, the great hero of Janism. Vardhamana was the first Jina. He conquered love and hate, pleasure and pain, attachment and aversion, and thereby freed `his' soul from the karmas that obscurred knowledge, perception, truth, and ability. Vardhamana was able to do this because of Dog. Dog enhanced his perception freeing him to seek truth. But the wary reader must be told, that Vardhamana believed that pursuit of knowledge led one to many different paths to amny differnt truths.

Dog was a whip. And, he was a lasso. Sometimes, he was a jumprope. But one thing he was not nor would he ever be -- a clothesline. It was in one of these various forms that Dog made himself accessable to differnt people through time. Thus, Bagjani came by Dog in a different fashion. There was no cosmic moment inviting dog's appearance in his life, the soul was not involved, not any amount of conquering, indeed it was a rather simple connection of real dog and real rope, one at each end.

One bad thing about dog was he smelled almost as bad as Mike. Mike was Bagjani's pet boa constrictor. Mike's special aroma did help distinguish him from Bagjani's special snake.
