Personal Information

Appearance

A plain girl of perhaps seventeen or eighteen, with long straight black hair neatly bound into a loose tail down her back, her skin carries the unhealthy pallor of one born in a shadowland. Her eyes too are a depthless black, and she wears the expression of someone who has never known an easy life. She carries a heavy leather satchel full of her medicines and warding implements everywhere she goes. She wears a kerchief over her hair, a long-sleeved hapi tunic, and a pair of hakama. Her only adornment is a magatama pendant on a thin strip of leather around her neck.

History

Rin was born in a village just within the borders of the Noss Fens shadowland, a tiny backwater place full of hard-faced fishermen and farmers who scraped out a living on what little arable land there was upon the edges of the noxious-smelling marshes. Life was always hard. Few children lived beyond their tenth year, what little were born healthy enough to survive that long, and only a handful of people were lucky enough to gain the distinction of old age and wisdom. Needless to say, the place was rife with ancestor-worship.

When the girl was four years old, the village was attacked by a contingent of hungry ghosts and nemessaries. The entire place was razed to the foundations, the villagers captured and the children corraled by the forces of the Underworld.

Rin remembers none of this. Her current memory begins at the age of twelve, five years ago when a traveling exorcist from the Sijanese Funerists Guild found the girl stumbling down the side of the road. She was hungry and terrified and ill from exposure. The exorcist took her along with him, thinking her some child who had lost her parents in a Fair Folk raid (and due to her dazed expression and her loss of memory, initially feared that the fae had ravaged the girl's mind and soul).

Once it was clear that no one would be claiming her anytime soon, Hyo Ehetere - for that was the exorcist's name - decided to take her as an apprentice. Under Hyo's tutelage the girl, whom he named Rin, learned the trade, learned to read and write, learned the lore of the Underworld and of Malfeas, learned the customs of the spirit courts. But mostly he instilled in her a sense of responsibility for those they served, that people would always be in need of their aid.

Rin and her master had traveled to a small village just outside Sijan, long-deserted but infested with hungry ghosts and part of a spreading shadowland across the River of Tears. It was Hyo and Rin's intent to ward the place and salt down the borders of the shadowland, to contain the problem until the Funerists could send a Dragon-Blooded master to treat with the spirits of the dead and obtain their help in putting the creatures to rest. Unfortunately, the two were accosted by a Daybreak Caste necromancer who called himself the Laughing Raven's Black Melody of Eternal Repose, and attacked without warning.

Hyo was killed in the onslaught, and Rin Exalted as she held off the necromancer's dark magic. Even with that, she would have died in short order were it not for the timely arrival of two women. The necromancer was forced to give ground and escape, while Rin's saviors bore her and her master's body back to Sijan. Overcome with grief and confusion, Rin didn't want to leave her world behind but felt it would be a bad idea to stay, and wished to travel north and west to speak with Hyo's only living relative, a sister. One of the women who had saved Rin, a Solar Exalt who called herself Johanna Mayhiros, suggested that the two travel together to Port Calin for safety's sake.

Once she arrived in Port Calin and delivered the news of Hyo's death to his sister Akahana, she confessed what she was to the woman. Akahana was surprisingly calm about the girl's new status as an Anathema, and suggested she travel north to Haslanti where it would be relatively safe for her. Rin did so, still disoriented and grieving, but eager to learn more about a world she lived in but knew so little about. And she vowed to use her new power to learn things that would help people as she'd been doing before, so that no one would suffer again as she had.

Rin's lack of childhood memory still haunts her, as do the constant malevolent whispers and headaches, and the intermittent nightmares that give her only enough of a glimpse to be maddening. She speaks of none of these things to anyone, feeling it is her burden to bear alone.

But eventually those lost years will resurface in her memories, and when that happens it is difficult to say what the consequences will be...

Trivia

  • Rin is a shadowlander; this is obvious from her features and her unhealthy appearance.
  • She has no memory of the first twelve years of her life, though she is plagued with constant headaches and terrible nightmares that occasionally give glimpses into her lost memories.
  • Occasionally she says and does disturbing things without realizing it.
  • Rin Ehetere is not her real name; it is the name granted to her by the Sijanese thaumaturge who took her as a daughter and apprentice. Possibly she had a name at one point, but if so it is buried in her lost memories.

OOC Knowledge

Please note that this is NOT PC knowledge; it is intended to be something for the ST to use at his discretion.

Rin was kidnapped and raised by the Dowager of the Irreverent Vulgate in Unrent Veils. Her village was destroyed by nemessaries when she was four years old and she was taken as one of the Deathlord's children to live in the Mound of Forsaken Seeds. The Dowager received an Abyssal shard to use for herself about the time Rin turned twelve, and chose six of her favorite "daughters" to complete a trial, a contest of various knowledges and skills that would determine the girl to be chosen as the Dowager's Abyssal champion (Shoat of the Mire). The others would be "sent to the merciful embrace of the Void."

Somehow, she managed to escape the swamps as she'd been desperate to do for years. The Dowager had grown complacent and careless, thinking that her children were so devoted to her and her ideals that they would never wish to leave her, and thus the area wasn't as well guarded as it should have been. That Rin managed the marshes at all is nothing short of remarkable, given how harsh the conditions are, and the nights of hunger and fear and then illness, combined with the trauma she'd suffered at the hands of a crazy Solar ghost for the last eight years, culminated in total amnesia.

Rin is totally unaware of any of this, and other than possessing the look of a shadowlander there is nothing obvious about that time. She had no amazingly speshul powaa, other than a lot of latent knowledge concerning Underworld lore and etiquette that her master simply brought to recall during her training as an apprentice exorcist.

As a result of spending her entire childhood in a Deathlord's citadel and in close proximity to the Labyrinth, Rin's soul is tainted by the Neverborn, and thus she has a Whispers score. Since her Exaltation as a Twilight, they have grown steadily more persistent - and more consistent. Before they were mostly intermittent. Other than her nightmares and the Great Curse (obviously), this is the only hint that something in her past is perhaps not exactly lily-white.

Also: she would probably instictively remember the Dowager as "Mother," and be deathly afraid of her.
