Appearance
History
For someone who seems so open Johanna is remarkably closemouthed. What little people in the teahaus know about her are a few bits and pieces from her past, many of them which seem to conflict. She claims to have grown up in abject poverty, yet she also claims the surname of a minor Gens and a childhood guardian. She claims to have been too fragile to fight on a battlefield, yet she claims to be in the service's special forces division.
In point of fact Johanna lies and embellishes and selectively ignores many things, but when it comes to her background she has mostly been truthful. (Just very confusing.)
The full story is thus: She was born in the third-floor room of a tenement house in the metic quarter in RY 740, the only child to a widowed refugee of a nameless nation in the Hundred Kingdoms region embroiled in civil war. Jo never knew her father; a man of Northern origin, he had died while her mother was pregnant with her, prompting her mother's flight to Lookshy.
Her mother was a seamstress who took in piecework from clients in the foreign quarter. Unfortunately she was also in poor health - she'd suffered from a heart malady since her childhood and the strain of childbirth in addition to the combined stress of her husband's death and her hurried flight west eventually took its toll. She died when Johanna was only seven.
Without any real options left to her (and an abusive landlady more than willing to use her as unpaid labor), she took to the streets for several years. Johanna begged for coin at first, at least until a war broke out with Thorns and the Realm and no one had charity to spare. So she learned how to pick pockets, and became quite adept at it.
Her mistake was in targeting a high-ranking officer of the Justice Directorate, and doing so in front of a friend of his. She was caught, of course, but the shozei's friend scouted her for the Legion. Instead of letting her go free to continue her life of petty crime her rights were signed away as a ward of the General Staff and she was conscripted into the Seventh Legion for training in the Tenth Talon. She did remarkably well, receiving several commendations, a sponsorship from Gens Taroketu, and other such awards.
Her Exaltation came when she was asked, as part of a special mission, to help hunt down a serial murderer who'd been troubling a region under the Seventh Legion's jurisdiction. Hearing that he mostly targeted prostitutes and street girls, she agreed, remembering her own past, and went on the prowl in disguise. Unfortunately for Johanna the man in question was a Day Caste Abyssal who had every intention of adding her to his collection. She Exalted in the midst of fighting him, and was quickly retrieved by the Fivescore Fellowship and taken to Yu-Shan for training.
Trivia
Character Notes
- While she primarily operates on trickery and misdirection, preferring to present a cute harmless face to the world, much of it is an affectation. It's uncertain how much, though.
- Her back is covered in old scars from beatings as a child.
