Mike Norton is a fictional character written for Relative Space. He is written by Jules and the PB is Eric Szmanda of CSI.

Basic Character Information
Mike was born and raised in San Francisco. His family's rumored to be related to the legendary Emperor Norton I (look him up if you want a fascinating read sometime). His parents split up when he was just a few years old. His mom took off and his dad never really had much time for him outside of work so he was mostly raised by his grandmother. Academics became his refuge from the difficult stuff in his life, he loved to learn, he's got a natural talent for advanced math and computer programming.
He got into UCSF. His grandmother died his freshman year. Sophomore year he got an internship at Decadyne Enterprises, doing quality assurance testing on some of their software releases. He was able to rewrite entire sections of code, earning him attention from higher up in the management and a full-time position a year and a half later. When he finished his bachelor's degree he moved into the research department and met Catherine. She quickly became his mentor, teaching him about a lot of the things she knew, in different scientific areas.
Mike earned a master's degree in software engineering and applications from Stanford University. Catherine funded his tuition and expenses and personally tutored him. Since she's really the only person who's taken an interest in his life or looked after him in any sort of way since his grandmother passed away, he's grown attached to her. He looks up to her, wants to follow her example, and he's fond of her; he suspects she feels the same way even though she would probably sooner fund another degree program than actually say it. So he tries to look after her as best as he can in return for all he feels she's done for him. He tries to keep her from working too much even though he's just as bad of a workaholic (he probably inherited that tendency from his father). He's sort of puzzled that Catherine rarely talks about her past or her personal life but that doesn't stop him from sharing everything with her.
Mike's a very loving and trusting sort of guy. He always looks for the best in every situation and in every person. That doesn't mean he won't stand up for what he believes in though. He's very loyal and always the first one to jump into a situation and help in any way he can. He wants to make a difference in the world, which is one of the reasons he stayed on at Decadyne even before he got to know Catherine. A lot of Decadyne's research and innovations have made positive differences in peoples lives, things like improvements in medications and medical treatments, advanced computer applications to improve communications and research, improvements in safety equipment, things like that. Mike's also worked with Catherine on some of her more private projects, things like investigating time travel and "salvaging" the things that might be alien technology. Mike assumed this was all theoretical stuff until Catherine called him saying the communicator worked and she met the Doctor and she was leaving. Now he doesn't know what to think but he's prepared to go where she goes.

Physical Description
Mike is about six feet tall, athletically built, with brown eyes and a very unruly mop of dark blonde/light brown hair.
Personality
Mike is very easygoing and sweet, always willing to talk to people or help them if he can. He rarely raises his voice, loses his temper, or swears. He'll stand up to defend the things he believes in or the people he loves though. He's very smart and confident but a little bit naive at times. He gets attached to people pretty easily, he just sort of accepts them if he gets the feeling they're good people when he first meets them and he stays very loyal to them.
History
When the Fifth Doctor first arrived on the scene Mike became very jealous of him and Catherine. That and the truth coming out about who Catherine really was led to him and Catherine falling out with each other. Catherine gave him everything she owned on Earth in preparation for leaving with the Doctor. That made Mike feel sort of guilty and he tried to mend fences with her only to have her get killed and regenerate on him. He was sort of unsure of this new Catherine at first but very soon fell just as much in love with her and admired her just as much as he had her predecessor.
Mike took a trip to the Bermuda Triangle and met Glenn Miller. Since then he's been a huge fan of Miller's music. Not long after he got back to San Francisco he was murdered by the Master. The Master masqueraded as Mike for a while until he was found out.
The Dalek Time bubble's wake sort of made things screwy for a little bit. One of the results was that Mike popped up again, from about two weeks before his death in his own timeline even though about two months had passed for Catherine and her Doctor. She tried to hide it from him at first but Mike quickly figured out that he had died. There were some rough times for him and Catherine as he tried to adjust to that and his jealousy reared its head a little bit when he saw how much she had moved on with things after he died. Once they got back on good terms Mike became more confident and started seizing each day as it came.
Mike tried his best to protect Catherine from the Mara and stand up to it but he wound up being pretty ineffective since he was out of his league with such an evil creature. For his troubles Catherine got a good drugging and he got locked naked in a storage room.

Random Facts
Mike likes both men and women [the stupid page said I was a link spammer for putting in the correct term here] which was sort of an open secret among himself and Catherine and his friends and coworkers. His personality changed after he returned "from the dead" because he realized how close he came to losing everything and he was determined not to risk dying without experiencing as much as he could in life again. Now that he's secure in the fact that Catherine loves him he doesn't have problems with jealousy anymore.
OOC-only Character Information
Mike doesn't know that since he left for London to join Catherine in his future the SFPD has started investigating him for her apparent murder. Now the police in London have a description of a man who looks like him (really the Master) attempting murder (the duel between the Master and alt!Ten).
Mike loves Catherine very much, the Doctor too. He knows Catherine loves him back. He's fully aware though that the Doctor's a better match for her and comes first in her life and he fully accepts that too. He knows someday he's going to have to leave her and live his own life but that day is a long way off right now.
The Master didn't kill Mike and steal his body in the same way he did his previous victims. Mike really was murdered. The means by which the Master made himself look like Mike are permanent.
The White Guardian has her reasons for allowing Mike to be taken out of his timeline so he could avoid death.
The communicator was sent to Catherine but it was meant for both Catherine and Mike. The senders (maybe with a nudge from the White Guardian) knew Catherine would bring him along too.
